Around the House

I practice square foot gardening, a high density growing practice, for vegetables. Here is a picture of my square foot garden. I plan on a picket fence this year to pretty it up.

I planted peas in the nearest garden box on Saint Patrick's Day.  Temperatures have been in the 30's and 40's since. The sprouts are just up now on April 9th.  I also have planted seed for kohlrabi, seed onions (which you can see in the picture), and radishes (in the taller box at the back). I started eggplant, green peppers and tomatoes (Big Boys and cherry) which have germinated and are now transplanted to planting trays. The trays are in the upstairs window to get some sun. Not much sun lately, so we'll see how they go. May have to start over again later. We generally can't get much done with a vegetable garden here until Memorial Day. I plan to grow zucchini, cucumbers, summer squash, green beans, spinach, carrots, lettuce, and pattipan squash as well.

My wife is taking a beekeeping class and we have purchased a hive and will be getting a colony soon. I'm learning along with her. I'm excited to be getting some livestock. Here is the hive assembled and painted.  Needs a couple coats of paint on the stand.
