I stopped by the Town Clerk and picked up nomination papers for Select Board.
I have been weighing whether or not to do so. It is often a stressful task just for me to get to a Select Board meeting on time. I work at a seafood processing plant and must rush home and get cleaned up before rushing out the door. I often don't have time for dinner. I tend to find the exercise stressful, others might not. I do.
I decided to take out the papers because there are things I would like to see the Town accomplish.
Here is a list of a few:
1. Traffic light priority systems to allow emergency vehicles to get a green light in their approach direction on traffic signals along the Route 6 corridor
2. Continued sound fiscal policy
3. Wind turbine installation
...
4. Create a fund to implement the SRPEDD recommendation to fix the Route 6/ Tucker Road/ Hathaway Road intersection
5. Create a plan and start to set aside CPC funds to build senior housing near the COA and Bullard Clinic.
6. Continue to investigate and implement consolidation of town departments, privatizing services if warranted, regionalizing services with our neighboring towns.
There are a few others as well.
I may expand on some of above items on this blog over the next few weeks

I well understand the stress that a high profile volunteer position can create. I trust you checked to see that you still had the passion to deal with all the nonsense. While I have not always agreed with you on the issues before the SB, I have always admired your integrity, honestly, and commitment to your beliefs. You have earned my vote again.

You are not a politician. You represent fairness, integrity, one of a kind. I have listen, observed, agreed, and disagreed. Three years ago, our town was heading down the financial road of no return. You pointed our town in the right direction. You had the support of two other select board members, and here we stand. With approximately 5.5 million in the reserve account, wind turbines, additional money for the general funding and more cooperation with the school department.
With out all the fan fare of anonymous allegations, you supported police promotions. Hired a new police chief, approved a police department command structure, with a chief, deputy chief, captain, three lieutenants, and several sergeants. Now we have a professional police department. You supported and the town voted it's first town override for additional monies for the police department, and general town offices.
You hired a new executive administrator, grant person, library administrator, and made yourself known in a quiet, but admirable way. I support you, my family supports you, and I would enjoy being on your committee to re-elect. Good luck.

I'm not sure the town should build senior housing. Why should public funds be used for such? Are there HUD programs that already cover such buildings? And I have another question: the police logs are always filled with shoplifting at the mall? Is the town reimbursed for these calls? Can the mall pay for the costs of a patrol/substation. It just seems like a cost that I don't want to bear.
Business already pays higher taxes and uses only the fire/police functions the town provides. They plow their own property, the have no children in school, they use police services because they have been the victim of a crime!
Should everyone who is victimized be charged more for the right to see a police officer?
The mall does not make the crime happen they are the victim!!

How wrong you are. The town has to invest disproportionally in many services in areas where businesses are. Maintaining roads, providing emergency services, having water and sewerage systems, and investing in traffic control systems are but a few of the extraordinary services the town provides. Business benefits from these types of services. You don't see businesses in a rush to move to Westport or New Bedford do you? The SB has been very fair to all the taxpayers in distributing the burden.
The single most expensive item on the towns budget is the school system. Businesses use ZERO % of the school budget.
State Rd is maintained by the state, all the lights and infrastructure is paid for by the state.
Victims of crime (even businesses) deserve police response, especially when it is the only service they use.
@ 12:10 - most every successfull business understands the value of a good education. To say business use 0% of the school budget is insane. What are the very first things a company looks for when locating a business in a community? Quality of life for their employees and guess what plays a large role in quality of life? Education. Wake up.

Lets all have a reality check, the businesses sell merchandised that is taxed, the state takes in tax money, and eventually a portion of this tax money is returned to the Town via free cash. Bottom line tax revenues that customers pay comes back to the Town at a later date. And businesses pay a higher water & Sewer rate as well, they more they use the more they pay!!
Here is the reality check. It doesn't amount to a damn where the business is that collects taxes. Businesses locate to Dartmouth because they think they can make money here. More than somewhere else. Why do they think they can make more money here than in, say Fall River? Because of things like the infrastructure that the town offers, physical location and convenience, relative security for their customers and employees, and abundant sources of labor. In the end, well run businesses benefit financially from being in Dartmouth. To complicated?

You are wrong, people are not moving to Dartmouth to accept a job at Target or Home Depot!
