Library Trustees meet with Finance Committee

The Library Board of Trustees met with the Finance Committee last night and the FinCom was unable to convince them to issue an RFP for library services.

Merry Christmas to all!!!

I was at this meeting and here are what I believe were the two most important points made. (1)With the dire financial position of the town,do the taxpayers want to commit to a multi-year contract with a private company even if it saves a lot of money. My opinion is that the public values the library enough to say yes. At least if they are locked into a contract, the library will be sure to get at least that much funding.
(2)The intra-library book loan system is contracted with the Board of Library Trustees and would not necessarily have to be abandoned if servicing the library were outsourced. A lot would depend on whether or not the Trustees will be able to receive a certification waiver. Outsourced or not, it looks like the Trustees are going to have to seek a waiver unless the public is willing to approve library specific overrides year after year.
This is a small sample of what was discussed at the meeting but I hope it helps with constructive dialogue concerning our public libraries.

It is unfortunate that my post above has initiated no constructive dialogue about our public libraries. Such is the nature of blogs I guess. While the initial postings by Bill are very informative, the comments section of postings often deteriorates into gutter politics, which again is very unfortunate.
