DCTV seeking new home

DCTV, Channel 18, has been asked to move out of their space in the Middle School to free up that space for students. The question now is where to move the operation. I talked to Ms. Cynthia Marland about what sort of space requirements she felt were needed. She thought that about 1700 sq. ft would be needed.
Our interim Executive Administrator has identified two possible solutions for a new home for DCTV. The first is to move them to town hall and provide office space and use the Select Board meeting room as a studio. This would require relocating some of the space used by boards or commissions to make room for DCTV. The other suggestion was to have the TV operation move ...

... into the old Town Hall located next to the police station. That building is used occasionally by the Recreation department which would then need to relocate the functions that are now held there.

Who pays for DCTV? Is it paid thru our contract with ComCast?

Any room in Bush Street? If the school is going to stay there and not move, if there is any available space or possibioity of making it, why not use it? Can some offices be combined into one area to make room?

How much luck has the school had in leasing out Cushman and Gidley?

Long-term, if there are no leasees, how about moving everyone (Bush St. asnd DCTV) into one or the other?

How about the ND library? Isn't it opened some of the time (and heated more now that is winter, I would imagine)? Could there be a combination library/DCTV media center if the intent is to keep the ND library open for some periods of time? All that is probably not really feasible, though, but I am thinking long-term as we seem to have a few unused/partially unused buildings around town?

Bill, why does the FinCom have to use room 315 for their meetings? It would be a huge benefit to residents to have their meetings televised. Room 315 is far too small to have extra equipment/crew in it, I would think, but it would be a tremendous service to have them televised.

I totally agree with the comment about televising FinCom meetings. There are very few minutes posted on the town website, and there should be an accurate, permanent record of what goes on in those meetings. Could be an eye opener for some town residents.

The old town hall, next to the police station, will be a great place. I think DCTV is a great asset to our town! We already own that building and it isn't used full time for anything that I know of. Maybe some work needs to be done, but a good spot!

The North Dartmouth Library is way too small for DC TV's needs.

I think town hall is a good idea. Couldn't the board meet elsewhere like the auditorium at the Southworth Library?

If they need to move I would say Old Town Hall. They really need a space that has a proper studio and space for growing but the really question is why does the school department want them to move out. I think DCTV has done a great job working with the schools and the town to cover meetings and school events are they going to be able to continue to cover these events if they need to move.
Also to anony. 9:21am people who pay for cable pay for DCTV. I asked this questions years ago and if you look at your cable bill there is something call maybe access fees and that is what pays for dctv.
Anyways DCTV keep up the good work and I hope the school department knows what they are doing because it would be a shame if dctv does not cover the school's programs like they do now after this move.
I have one finally questions who is going to pay for this move in this tight time because I am sure it is not going to be cheap.

The middle school is the most overcrowded school in the system.They need all the space they have.

I have a simple and logical move. Move the Historical Commission (m 318) which also backups up to the Selectmans mtg room. Move DCTV to Rm 318 , move the Historical Commission into the empty meeting room around the corner (the Railroad room). there would be no cost to these moves.

Wouldn't there be some cost? They still have to move from one building to another, not one room to another in the same building.

Just a thought: I know we are talking about expensive equipment here, but couldn't some of this be done by volunteers? Again, just a thought to try and find some cost savings, since we need all the help we can get, and one idea can lead to another. Maybe we don't have to call in the professional movers.

to the previous speaker, you right im sure there woudl be a cosu to move dctv form the middle school to town hall. I would volunteet to assist with my truck. (its not like you have to go far). Rm 318 seems to be the best so far, its a large room and behind it is the selectmans mtg room. Rm 318 is the
next the Marland meeting room (also used for meeetings).
rm 318 is the only "office" in that hallway. its perfect. As for the Historical Commission moving..no cost again..they have a table some chairs and 3 file cabinets. again I'd volunteer to move them too just to save money. Just a thought the Historical commission has 8 members couldn't they help with this move too?

As you can read in Bill's comments they need at least 1700 square feet. The Historical room does not have 1700 square feet. It is closer to 150 square feeet.We are not just talking about office space they need space to tape things and then also put them together.
I know you say the Middle Schools needs more space but this is not being done to make more class rooms it is being done to move 1 class from the "tunnel"to the main floor because they dont think the kids should be down there for a full day. When I went to High School there was never a problem with classes in the "tunnel". I think it is just a waste of money since the number that I have heard from some people is that it is going to cost between $65,000 - $100,000. The actually moving cost is low it is the power, air conditioning and misc stuff that add up to this number.

Imagine the nerve, they actually want to use the school as a school and put kids in actual classrooms. Those kids, does it ever end with them?

Find a new home for DCTV.

Find DCTV a new home but nothing fancy, go easy on the costs and require DCTV to absorb them.

From the sounds of last night's meeting. Dr Marland would be ok with going to the Old Town Hall building. I think it would make a good permanent home for the station which seemed important to everyone as well as provide a stream of visitors to that neat old, historic structure. Now the question is how it gets paid for - it seemed from last night's meeting ComCast would not fund the move and it's likely to cost over $75k. Where does that come from?

As I listened to the DCTV people at the SB meeting explain what they needed in a new space, (2000 sq ft, high ceilings etc), I felt that the old town hall was the best fit out of all the suggested places. It seems to fit their needs and is also centrally located. I have toured the Middle School and I would agree with them if they say that they need the space. As far as the cost of the move goes, it cannot be avoided but I am not sure yet how I feel it should be funded. It is certainly an expense that falls into the "one time" category which means I would consider it a good candidate to be paid for with "one time" revenue.

Maybe they should check with the Prez. I hear he's giving out all sorts of money for 'shovel ready' projects. Seriously though, I wonder why ComCast is not a possibility to fund some of this?

DCTV is an important resource in Dartmouth. I hope they can work with the school com. and make their move happen quickly. I wish they didn't have to move, but I realize the Middle School needs more room. Just hope they can continue.
