The result of this town election is important given the candidates and their positions on issues.Ms. Gilbert, along with Mr. Michaud and me, ...has been working to change the culture and functioning of the town departments. I hope that we can continue on that course after April.

I never knew Ms. Gilbert had such qualifications. She has been very modest about them in the past .
Anybody but Gilbert!
Diane is very qualified but more importantly she has integrity. Her only agenda is doing what is best for the whole town, not just a few. Her record stands as proof that for her the citizens of Dartmouth come first.
I find Diane Gilbert to be a little rough around the edges, but I have to commend her diligence in getting to the bottom of issues that have gone unaswered for years, she has shown she will not back down and I respect her for that. Maybe she wouldn't be so abrasive if she didn't have to be attacked for trying to find out why the citizens of Darmouth have been kept in the dark for 20+ years, she did what many were afraid to do, even prior and current SB members
I hope she loses by a wide enough margin to prevent her from ever considering running again.
We all owe a debt of gratitude to Diane for exposing the cronyism and contracts for life. She may be a pit bull; but when you are trying to break up entrenched corruption, what do you want? A Yorkshire terrier?
I agree that we owe Diane Gilbert our thanks for exposing those rotten contracts. Unfortunately, I also believe she has worn out her welcome because of the very negative way in which she has treated people over the past three years.
She's gone!
The three amigos are no longer! Thank God!
Great website, Diane! Thanks for having the courage and integrity to uncover those secret contracts that are poisoning our town! It may not have been the most popular thing to do, but it was the right thing to do! Thank You.
I would be very happy to have you serve for three more years.
Diane,
I feel that with you on the board at least my kids have a chance of not being saddled with debt before they even start to make their way in this world.
Anonymous 7:29, I guess you don't mind paying those fees. You can thank Diane for that! Fees vs taxes, you made the choice so she whacked you with the fees, that's transparency for ya!
Curt Brown's Select Board candidates article was very interesting. I guess Lara Stone's true colors were bound to come out sooner or later. This is the "positive" candidate? This is the candidate who will work with others? Sounds like she can't even deal with an opposing view for an interview never mind a three hour Select Board meeting. Her reaction to a statement made by Diane Gilbert was not that of a "leader" but of someone who does not and cannot work well with others. Ms. Stone appears to react emotionally rather than rationally. Her continued support and defense of an irresponsible $8.5 million override clearly shows she is not capable of understanding fiscal responsibility. Her campaign reminds me of another one not too long ago where the public was fed a bunch of misinformation to get an override passed. Lara Stone is being passed off as the candidate of change, fiscal responsibility and possessing the ability to work with others. The public did not buy it the first time and I'm hoping it will not buy their trash this time either.
Well crafted website Diane which is informative and easy to read.
A recent letter in the ST said listen to what a candidate is saying before passing judgment. I would like to respectively disagree. In polities as in life, look at what a person does, and not what they say to see their real character.
Diane Gilbert’s actions speak volumes to those who are watching and care about the future of Dartmouth.
You are absolutely right. Lets look at the past. Lara Stone was a huge supporter of the 2007 override which if it had passed, would have made our financial crisis worse. Not only was she a strong supporter but according to her statements to the ST, she still believes that it was the solution to our problems and makes no apologies for it. She obviously has no clue regarding financial matters. Diane Gilbert understood what that override would have done to this town and was the lone opposing Select Board member. She wasn't afraid to stand up and say it was wrong. I don't want a town official who pretends to be what the town needs. I want someone who actually is.
Good luck Diane or Michael!
Sure I like paying fees and getting less in services and with fees only the ones using the services like bus's,trash pickup, beaches and soon probably the library have to pay.So thanks Diane! My budget has been stretched but not all the taxpayers. I think that was fair. Dont you?
Yes I love paying non tax deductible fees while I get less services. That's responsible? Why is it acceptable to mount up the fees and now the legal costs? That's good leadership? I will never vote for Diane again as I don't have 3 more years to wait for her to figure out how to implement any solutions if she were to have some. By the way what exactly was her alternative solution during the proposed 2007 override, and what exactly are her solutions/plans for the future now?
Yes she can point out the problems but where are the solutions? Oh yes that's what the EA's job is and her excuse for not being able to have any solutions she conveniently blames on him. Well I am not buying that either.
Good leaders set direction and all Diane has done is point out problems in an angry and divisive manner. Yes you can identify problems but at some point in time you need to roll up your sleeves, stop shaking your head at everyone, work together and help develop some solutions to those problems.
Please inform us all. What are Ms. Stone's solutions? We already know Mr. Miller's. From what I have read from Ms. Stone she still believes an override was the solution. Stating that she wants to work together is not a solution. All I've heard is rhetoric.
http://www.electlarastone.com/issues2.html
Diane Gilbert has had 3 years to present solutions.
to annon 9:50 It sounds like your one of the ones not affected by the fees! sure wiuld of been nice to deduct my $900 on my taxes. So enjoy your fee free life. For me Diane gets the boot! Time for change just as we put her in for as far as I am concerned she did not deliver!!!!! we are going to spend even more on these contracts rather than trying to settle in house and move on!
http://www.electlarastone.com/issues2.html
Looks like some very good ideas there, not rhetoric at all.
I too am tired of "Fees" non-deductable at that. Im paying alot more in fees than my taxes would have gone up. Apart from diane pointing out the problem , she has no solutions except continuing to point out the problem. sounds like that famous statement "our expenses are outrunning our revenue's" we will get to the point soon where we cant cut anymore because there will be nothing left to cut. We will have no choice but increase taxes. I find it funny that Lara's support of an override 2.5 years ago is continually brought up while Diane's support isnt mentioned even after she states its need on her website. I voted for Diane 3 years ago but I find after watching the meetings and reading the newspapers that I applaud her efforts for transparency in Government. I believe this is something we all want but disagree with her methods. The same result can be achieved by working together in co-operation not witchhunts and slander.
Former gilbert supporter
All I need to know is this, David Vincent is a strong supporter of Diane Gilbert.
David Vincent once placed a gun on the table at a meeting of the DPW.
David Vincent, has in the past been very good for Dartmouth, but lately, an embarrassment.
Diane Gilbert will not get my vote.
This is why Lara Stone will not be elected. Not because she is not a competent candidate, but because the character of her campaign supporters is so uncompromising and intolerant of any other views other then their own. You literally drive people away with your negative campaign tactics. If any of you could possible disagree with any amount of civility you would be amazed how more receptive people would be to your views.
And this is why we all get one vote ! Use it wisely! See you in April!
Intolerent is a word I would have associated with Diane Gilbert. As for negative campaign tactics I would remind you of the contant posting of Lara's override support from 2.5 years ago while neglecting Diane's override support from last year. If you are going to mention one you must mention both. And reading back thru this thread I see no slander or tactics. People simply offering their opinions.
Still a former gilbert supporter
Still waiting for Diane's proposed solutions anon 9:50am. I pointed out Lara's on her website and she hasn't even had the benefit of time in office yet. Think what she could do if she actually had 3 years to implements some of those ideas?
I have visited Lara's website. As I said, a lot of rhetoric. Nice ideas but with no substance and not very realistic. Take for instance the notion that we can obtain help from our local hospitals for our seniors. Medicare has been drastically cut and SouthCoast is laying their people off. Not much hope there. Stone has a lot of ideas for getting help but fails to note that every organization and business is strapped right now and there is no help coming from any where. Cities and towns are on their own. I want someone who understands that and isn't basing our financial future on wishes.
The override that was referred to in many posts was not the 2008 but the irresponsible $8.5 million 2007 override. Stone was a huge supporter. Gilbert was not and spoke out against it.
You took one small idea out of context anon 1:03pm, how pathetic you are. To all, here is an excerpt of just one paragraph from Lara's website full of many ideas:
Restoration of Community Values
The Town of Dartmouth has everything it needs to be one of the best communities in New England. We have a diverse economy with a unique balance of light industrial, retail, service, agricultural, and waterfront business. We have rural farmlands, coastal beaches, tight-knit neighborhoods, and a thriving university. We have a strong history of good schools, quality libraries, compassionate elder care programs, and well-run public works and public safety services. We can solve our financial problems while maintaining our town values in the following ways:
Strategizing with economic development leaders in surrounding towns and cities to attract emerging industries, green businesses, and service providers to the Southcoast.
Investing in our children by applying school department consolidation or restructuring cost savings to curriculum enhancement. We’ve got to maintain an excellent innovative school system with a high rate of graduation, college admission, and post-secondary training.
Better marketing our certified library system to families, entrepreneurs, retirees, and students so circulation remains high, and private and state grant opportunities can be accessed.
Partnering with Southcoast hospitals, local health care providers and the Council on Aging to seek funding for health screening, food bank and nutritional services.
Being out in front on regionalizing police, fire and emergency dispatch services so Dartmouth is a leader in keeping our community safe and can offer service delivery options to smaller surrounding towns.
Seeking private grant and community foundation funds for education, literacy, at-risk youth, and elder care in our town. Consider partnership opportunities with the YMCA, UMass, Dartmouth Public Schools Department, and SouthCoast hospitals.
Cuts in services demand creative approaches to continued funding — just cutting the services with no plan for restoring or maintaining them is irresponsible.
Creating a community task-force to build increased revenue streams into the parks, recreation and waterfront budget.
You think jokes from SNL help you now?
No, but if you would listen you would understand when someone is trying to help you.
Say good night Kathleen.
Oh now you are helping me to understand because I am not smart enough to see your point of view. Yes of course now I see I can not have an opposing view, because this is Bills blog so all must agree with him, Diane or Frank G. Thanks for the clarification.
To Anon 8:16
If everyone has to agree with Bill why are our "thoughtful" comments still posted? Dont cry about lack of access. The problem is that your ideas are falling flat.
I would challenge anyone to put their name to the post that accuses David Vincent of putting a gun on the table at a public meeting. You know that is a lie and you also know that if you accused him directly, you would be defending yourself in a slander suit. No shortage of cowards around here.
Why were we revisting Bernier and Hickox case again?? Why was it after El Commandente looked at the paper work it was shelved?? Maybe it's becasue if he had opened that can of worms he would have looked like a jackass. Thanks for wasting our time on that one.
One selectman spent an hour of his own time looking at the case. Howe did this waste your time?
It wasnt a public meeting it was a deposition regarding legal matters. The gun story is true but old news.
Say good night Kathleen.

The same can be said about Gilbert supporters.

You are kidding me? Where have you been all these years?
Over the years, David has shot at planes flying low over his farm, got into fights and arguments over little things, threatened people with physical harm and stated that someone was trying to poison him by tainting his well.
So why are you afraid to put your name on the gun accusation?
Innuendos again. Shot at planes? Were you there? If so please state your name as a witness to this. I have found that those who are portrayed as being the bad guys are usually the ones who have integrity. They are accussed of all sorts of deeds that can never be proven but it sure sounds good. If you are going to make these accusations, please have the courage to do so openly instead of hiding behind an anonymous post.

Ask Walter Faria and Sid Kaplan.
Sid and Wally? What a joke. Make wild accusations and then tell people to go ask someone else. This is proof that you know nothing about your accusations. You are a slanderer. No more slander!!!!!
Bill, not sure why but some of the comments posted are running into the previous post. Makes some comments sound confusing and others a little crazy.
Got to love it. You won't post your own name but you throw out two other citizens' names as if to say "see". Pretty pathetic.
I cannot post my name as I fear for my life. Don't want to get shot.
I see. So you won't post your own name but you are willing to post others' names even though you feel there is a threat. How courageous of you.
Gosh, "Michael" - so glad you've identified yourself beyond the anonymous.
I await April voting day so that I may independently cast my vote for Diane for she speaks her mind with care and deligence. Our town needs a self thinking woman so that feelings of honesty in regards to the town's betterment is the main concern. Thanks Diane and stay focused.
