The Standard Times has this article by Curt Brown about full day kindergarten funding that the Fall Town Meeting will consider. This post has a link to the warrant.
The article says that the plan is to have 4 classrooms at Cushman,
Greg Jones, a member of the School Committee and the steering committee, said there are tentative plans for 13 full-day kindergarten classes — four at Cushman and nine at Quinn.I don't know why ...
... we would modify, operate and staff a building to get 4 classrooms, It seems to me that we have that many rooms now for the 1/2 day program at Potter and DeMello. I'll bring that up tomorrow at the Select Board meeting which will include the Finance and School Committees.
I'll let you know the answer I receive.
What do you think about this? Tell us in comments.

Bill, there would also be 4 pre-school rooms at Cushman. I believe these would come from Quinn.
Yes the four pre-school classrooms would move from Quinn to Cushman.
Sounds like you havent been to the meetings bill. is that true?
I have not attended any of the three meetings for full day kindergarten. I have a day job as well as being on the Select Board.
Is the meeting on Thursday going to be on DCTV?
doesnt everyone else too bill? they make time.
Bill your probably talking to a lil old retired man, with nothing better to do than sit on here day in and day out and complain about everything, but has never done anything himself
O.K. I guess it's time for the civility police to step up again. Just when things were going so nicely. It always seems like whenever a school issue comes up, the nasties rear their ugly head. Since word about town is that Doug Roscoe will be running for school comm. and without further adoo, let's hammer Dougie boy in retalliation for the posts that have been criticizing Mr. Trimble. You all know that I am committed to not standing by idley while those I favor are unfairly criticized. How many meetings does Dougey boy go to? The answer is almost none. Why? Because his HUUUUGE ego tells him that he doesn't need to. After all, he is already sooo much smarter than everyone else. This is as far as I will go at this point but rest assured that if the attacks keep coming, I will respond with a vengance. I am retired and I can monitor this blog all day if need be.
thats quite a life you got going for yourself isnt it there pal
when did doug roscoe get into this?
all some one said was there are other people going to alot more meetings there then your boy bill and there are. but he's the one with the moral stance of I work full day job and I go to select board meetings every thursday. Seems there's some who do more and then there's the people here who " can monitor this blog all day if need be." and dont forget Bill was the one without a clue about what the extra rooms were going to be used for. If he had indeed gone to the meetings or called he would know but he followed the blog first ask questions later formula guarenteeing people get up in arms about percieved dishonesty. Well done Bill
If you must continue with the attacks then so must I. Doug Roscoe is posting here, attends far less meetings than Trimble, but has an ego so big that he feels he doesn't have to. By the way, it looks like Trimble holds a real job while Roscoe does nothing except sit in his ivory tower telling the rest of us what he thinks is best for us. Hey Phil, have another Whopper.
I just called DCTV and they said they are not covering the meeting. Bill why are they not covering this meeting? Is this not a Select Board Meeting?
From time to time the Select Board has workshop meetings during the week that are not televised. This has been common practice through the years. I suppose we could ask them to televise it but in this case we did not.
I sttend a fair number of meetings other than the Select Board. I go to Finance Committee meetings, Conservation meetings, Community Preservation, and others. I have not been to the full day kindergarten meetings because I had other commitments on those days. I have been kept informed of the meetings by those who have attended. There was no mention of moving preschool to Cushman in any of the correspondence that I received.
I don't think that asking questions is an example of creating perceived dishonesty. I don't think I need to jump on the phone every time I have a question either. Especially when I am scheduled to meet in a couple days.
Why do you feel the need to defend Bill all the time? Are you afraid that Bill will be defeated in the next election? It's a year a way you know? Are you confused, do you think he is up for re-election this April?
Anyone ask how often the remaining four Select Board members attend any town meetings and committees?
they didnt post open ended questions on their blogs.
That's because they either attended the meeting or they took the time to speak to someone who did. Moral to the story ask questions first, post later.
Discussion of issues is a goal here. I asked a question and I got information from Phil and Doug Roscoe. Which is what some commenters here have asked that I do. OK, done.
I have observed that there are some who feel that the school department cannot be questioned. Some of these in the next breath say that the school department is part of the town. It seems to me that either the schools are part of the town and subject to the same scrutiny and criticism as other departments, or the schools are not part of the town in which case, they should not ask for the Select Board to endorse their plans. Town Meeting can decide.
I was surprised to find that the meeting tonight would be televised. I don't know why it was or who asked for it to be. Who should I call? ;)
Lara attends far fewer extra meetings than Bill does. That is a FACT. Let's vote her out. She is there for one reason only, to get the school administrators more money.
I was happy that the meeting was on DCTV. I think all Select Board Meeting should be on always. Why did Steve Russell have a problem with it? Bill did you have a problem with it? Steve's comments when he first stepped up to speak could have been said in private to the Select Board and he did not have to make a big deal of it at that moment. Funding to prepare for Full Day K is coming up at next weeks town meeting so why would you not want to have a discussion about this now in front of everyone. It just seemed like they, School Department, did not want all the information to come out right now before town meeting.
"I have not attended any of the three meetings for full day kindergarten. I have a day job as well as being on the Select Board."
Well, so do the people who have been at these meetings.
10:06pm
Are you on this planet? Stone goes to many many meetings. I have seen all select board members at additional meetings in the past few months. By the way, stop talking about voting peolpe oput 2 1/2 years away. Anyway, there are a few others to remove first.
I think the presentation by Dr. Russell was excellent. I also appreciate both Phil and Doug for their willingness to post good information for us here and Phil for the work he does in support of our children. Bill I appreciate your work on the SB and your willingness to have a blog. I just wish you would not allow people to post such nasty things about good people and that you would do your homework to get your facts straight prior to posting.
Why only 4 classes at Cushman? Why not keep the kindergarten classes at the schools where they are now; Potter, DeMello, Quinn and to keep class size down also at Cushman. To have all of the full day kindergarten at two schools (Quinn & Cushman) seems wrong. Class size could be lower at each of the elementary schools if they had classes at 4 schools.
I watched the meeting last night. Mr. Russell seemed very arrogant to me. I guess he doesn't want meetings to be on tv. I think the public should be able to hear what the SB, FinCom and SC say about full day kindergarten. I realize that workshops are open to the public, but many more people can watch tv even if they can't make it out to a meetings at night. They should all be on tv!
There are 13 kindergarten classrooms needed and there is not enough room for all at one school
Simple math people. If you have 4 half day kindergarten classes in one school, you use 2 classrooms.
If you have 4 full day classrooms classes in one school, you use 4 classrooms.
If that school is full now with 4 half-day K classes running, where are they going to get the 2 extra classrooms needed if the K classes go full day?
I say full day K classes should be spread out at Potter, DeMello, Quinn, and Cushman. If that means one class at one school because of overcrowding, fine. Example: 2 classes each at Potter & DeMello, 4 classes at Cushman and the remainder at Quinn.
All we heard when Quinn opened was how crowded it was, now you want to put 9 full day K classes there!
Go back to the drawing board. I don't want my little one traveling across town when there is already K classes at Potter.
Folks, you are missing the point. Anything to get the beloved Cushman school open again. Perfect excuse to later claim it isn't fair for all those children to be put there so let's spread them out to the other schools. Now there will be open space at Cushman once again and the little village children can go back to their private school since it will be open anyway for some K students. Why have a school only partially full??? There is good reason not to trust the schools. Dr. Russell's behavior is one very good example. We don't want the public to know what we are doing because let's face it, we are up to no good. Past experience proves this to be the case.
I agree what a moron. havent you followed this at all? gidley gets no state reimbursement! get it! no money back from the state for improvements. total ADA bill over 700,000 ! cushman after the renovations about 10,000! This is what they call a slam dunk.
Are you saying that the schools are going to ask for state money for Cushman? Where did the $700,000 figure come from? I haven't heard it discussed.
the gidley $700,000 I believe came for the ADA town report. Ask Phil Lenz, he does that ADA stuff. what I said was if the town were to do renovations to Gidley we would not be reimbursed like the Quinn windows. We will be reimbursed if major renovations are done to Cushman. It was never discussed because Gidley wasnt chosen, for obvious reasons
Why can't there be the nine K classes at the Quinn as proposed and two at Potter and Demello schools? The town of Dartmouth has been with out full day K for years. Why now? Why not wait until the economy gets better? As far as I know the state has not mandated full time K as of yet. Let's not forget all the revenue cuts that still are to come. Can the town afford new desks, equipment, new teachers, etc. for FOUR classes? Why did all this information just come out now, a week before town meeting? I pray that town meeting members are working for all the towns people and not for a selected few.
I have an idea!!!! Why not put the far north end of town (Collins Rd., Highland Ave, Reed Rd., Old Fall River Rd., etc., etc.) in the four all day K in Cushman School and the South Dart. K kids in Quinn. I wonder how that would sit? Hmmmm!
To 9:45 AM There is only about a 2 mile differance from Quinn to Cushman.
