UMass Dartmouth tries for a law school

The Standard Times reports here on a proposal to have Southern New England School of Law (SNESL) donate their facilities to UMass Dartmouth and become the first public law school in the Commonwealth.
This would be a real feather in the cap for Dartmouth and the UMass system. Call or write to your legislator and tell them we want this! I have talked to Mr. Quinn about it ...

... in the past and he supports it. I don't know what Senator Montigny thinks of the issue. Still it doesn't hurt to let him know that his constituents would like this law school in our town.
This merger was attempted in 2005 and failed due to opposition from private law schools and the former Governor.

If it doesn't cost the state anything (and it won't), I favor it.

I hope UMASS gets a law school. Why not?

The taxpayers cant afford this merger, you are aware that 65+ employees at Umass Dartmouth lost their jobs since July 1 2009. These jobs were NOT administrators, and more job losses are expected. With all these job losses how did the chancellor receive at 30,000 RAISE on July 1 2009? Hello? Were is all the stimulus money for educations? so far Umass has built a parking lot and re-paved six others. No jobs saved, the costs have risen for students, and yet less and less servies for the students duw to cuts. what?
Now, how about the crime on campus which doesnt seem to be addressed by our town officials.
How many times does OUR police respond to the campus to help? How many times does OUR ambulance repond there for intoxicated students. How many times were there delays to other parts of OUR town due to OUR services being tied up on campus? Can't they use a private ambulance service? AMR is just around the corner (Rt 6), Eascare is on Faunce Cor Rd too.
Where does the crime stats for the campus get posted for OUR residents to see? You might just be surprised on whats going on there.
I wont go into how and false fire alarms there are, that again cost the fire districts money, then get remebursed from the town thru the fire tax. 2-3 times a day at least.
What measures has Umass done or is doing to releive to traffic backups on Old Westport Rd/Cross Rd/Rt 6?
Yet they want to add more TAX EXEMPT property..so the town receives less..come on this is crazy.
I would hope our town officials become more procative and address the on-going issues before adding to the problems.

Good Luck Mardee Xifaris, a public law school would be great. I hope to see this work out.

I have never been PROUDER of the the position taken on this issue by State Represehtative John Quinn of Dartmouth. John is a graduate of Suffolk Law School. Despite that, he is advocating for fairness and for Southern New England School of Law.

I voted for Tim Cahill for State Treasurer. With his recent comments on southcoast rail and now on the law school, I think he's shown himself to be just another pro-Boston, anti-New Bedford politician, pandering to The Big City. He will not get my vote for Governor.

The impact this will have on our infrastructure and services should be of great concern to the town.

yes to law school said...

Impact on our infrastructure! Please! Have you driven on Faunce Corner Road lately? The lack of planning/traffic of business on Faunce Corner Road is a topic for another blog. The law school is already here!
I think it will be a plus for UMASS. I hope it happens!
