Just received the bad news. Chief Mark Pacheco has submitted his letter of retirement. This action takes effect on January 11, 2010. Congratulations to Mark Pacheco. You can stand tall and walk the street of Dartmouth. I know you were planning on staying for another two years, but your a man of vision. You can see where the S.B. is taking our police department. We have four selectmen who don't care about employee dedication. “You got to have the degree's”.
I want the guy/gal who knows what it takes to be a cop. The select board is taking this town in a new direction. Once again, I don't blame you for retiring. As a man of vision, you can see the handwriting on the S.B. wall.
Frank...people shouldn't get promoted just for dedication. Finding the most qualified candidate, within or outside, should always be the goal. You don't reward people ust because they were there the longest.
I agree people shouldn't get promoted for being there the longest. However, when someone has the qualifications and the dedicated service BOTH they should be selected.
Such was the case with Robert Szala.
Further, it erodes the moral of the Police Department when someone from outside takes the Chief job. Instead of promoting a chief from with and opening another position of rank. We hire from outside and rank is stagnant within the police department. This is not how we should treat the hardworking men and women that protect us everyday.
Other departments have tried "outside" hiring with disasterous results. Check with NBPD and Westport PD, they will never hire from outside again.
House bill DOA in Senate. Wooo hooooooooooooooooo
