Stay tuned on Tuesday, Select Board candidate bonanza

UPDATED MONDAY
On the last day to take out nomination papers and at the final hour, candidates made their way to the Town Clerk's office and took papers for multiple seats.

Former Select Board member Robert Miller took papers for both Select Board seats.
UPDATE- Curt Brown says on his blog that Mr. McDonald has only taken nomination papers to run for Ms. Dias' seat
I am told that School Committee member Shawn McDonald also took papers for both Select Board seats. Mr. McDonald had previously taken papers to run for re-election to School Committee.

Frank Gracie of Tucker Road has pulled nomination papers to run for the seat held by Natalie Dias joining Ms. Avila, Mr. Gonsalves, Mr. Pacheco and Jamie Melo in that race.

UPDATE- Curt Brown says on his blog that Mr. Gonsalves has taken nomination papers to run for both seats.
Some comments here have indicated that Mr. Gonsalves has also taken nomination papers to run against Mr. Michaud. I am not aware that he has. Only Ms. DeFreitas, Mr. Miller, and Mr. McDonald have ...

... done so as far as I know. I have also posted here about the candidates taking out nomination papers.
Should be Dartmouth's version of March madness by the look of things right now.
Ready, set, .... wait til Tuesday for more details

Amazing! wonder why the last minute rush? We'll see who's serious come Tuesday I guess.

Wow. If Bob Miller is dumb enough to think he can win, we will finally be able to witness his political death. If he runs against Joe Michaud, he will be trounced. If he runs in the other race, he will lose, perhaps even coming in dead last. Either way, Bob Miller will lose and the Town of Dartmouth will win.

Mr. McDonald took papers for the Dias seat...

That's quite a list. Some known, some unknown, and some too well known. Let's all step up and do the best thing for our community. If we watch, read, listen and attend Candidates Night, I'm confident we can sort through the bull.... and make an informed decision.

People are terrified Bob is running again. The only reason he lost last time was because he was in a 3 man race and he lost by less than 50 votes. Without a third party and the FACT that Michaud has been a proven liar I like Bob's chances.

Curt has the official list posted from the town clerk on his blog Bill.
Miller took papers for both seats as did Gonsalves.

Everyone else is in one race or the other.

I think it is great that Mr. Miller is running. I doubt he will even show up on candidates night. That will speak volumes for his record. As in, he has nothing of any positive significance at all to point to for all his years on the SB. After all, he surely would not want to have questions asked of him about collusion, corruption, union boot licking, cronyism, misuse of public authority, fiscal irresponsibility, bullying, etc., etc., and etc.

Mr. McDonald visited my home yesterday and asked me to sign his papers, which I gladly did.

I asked him about his decision and he said that he is going to run for the Select Board seat because he wants to do more for the community and work with the other members for the Town.

We had a short conversation, but he told me that he would come by again to discuss more.

I like Joe Michaud.

In his three years, Joe Michaud has been a leader, taking our town in a new direction, change is good.
If he was a local politician he would have kept M.G. as E.A. If Joe wanted favor with the police department/union, He would have voted for an in house police chief. Joe Michaud is good for Dartmouth....
Three more years.

Anonymous said...

hello DFACTSONLY....

Michaud never initiated ANY of that stuff. Give me proof he did and Ill acknowledge it.

Leader?...if I remember correctly, he was the one cracking jokes and trying to be mr. funny man during a special town meeting...professional?

I think not...most businesses promote from within...common practice.

NOT JOE he put his good friend Republican city councillor in as head of the police.

Joe has done a good job, however, he is only one and only has one vote out of five. I enjoy watching the meetings now with Joe as chair. KHM was a nightmare; pointing her finger and screaming at people. I think the SB is moving the town in the right direction. Mr. Cressman is a plus for Dartmouth. Tim Lee would be a perfect fit for the police dept. Mr. Lee certainly has the qualifications. I hope we can keep Joe for another three years.

Watching the race..."fact" is Joe Michaud made the third vote to discontinue the services of the former E.A.
Ms. Gilbert was the first SBM to raise the issue, Bill Trimble was the second vote and when Michaud was elected the former was on his way out. Getting a new E.A. was good for Dartmouth. Bring a chief, who is qualified, from outside the department is a good thing.
Joe Michaud made a few mistakes during the learning curve...yes he has...as the board chairman for two years I've witnessed a man who knows his way. As it relates to making light of certain issue(s) I find it's refreshing. You don't want to get rid of a good SB member just because he makes a joke or two. We the people take life to serious....

Anonymous said...

I'm happy to hear that Shawn McDonald is running for selectman. Hey....McDonald the town needs more people like you and me.

Anonymous said...

Learning curve? like the split tax? That has nothing to do with a learning curve, that has to do with what is politically expedient.

As for the EA? we'll see. He has a higher salary than the former EA, THE TAXPAYER HAD TO PAY FOR HIM TO MOVE.

and as for the new chief, well he will NEVER move to Dartmouth, which is part of his contract of over 100K a year.

Joe leaves early on multiple occasions from meeting that he scheduled in regards to regionalization.

Joe can take credit for trying to eliminate Kevin Lee...and make jokes about it too...

Shaun MacDonald would be the absolute worst candidate for us to elect. Please go away. We've had enough of your arrogance.

to 4:38

I get it. Everything was fine when Miller, Carney, Dias and Horan-MacLean were running the town (and their predecessors). No fiscal problems, balanced budget, big raises for everyone, nearly 1,000 people on the payroll, lifetime contracts for the chosen ones, arrogance towards dissenters, personal attacks, harassment and more. Why change? You must have done well with that group.

Anonymous said...

no actually i can't stand you people pandering to Joe. He is nothing but a man that wants a poltical carrer. he will do what is politically expedient to get elected, NOT WHAT IS RIGHT.

I will never forget this was the GILBERT/GRACIE BLOG last year...you guys know how to pick 'em.....hahaha

Conservative(ISM) is terrible, your thought process is SCREWED UP...giving tax breaks to the rich...IT HAS NEVER WORKED THROUGHOUT HISTORY.

Anonymous said...

Every town had fiscal problems during that time, but Dartmouth was judged as one of the better run communities in the Commonwealth. I guess you forgot that lil tidbit in the midst of your rant.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Miller is apparently counting on support from the unions and people who have not done their homework. You know, oh there is a name on the ballot that I am familiar with so I will mark my vote here! As bizarre as that may be, it got him elected in the past. For the average citizen's sake, let's hope that voters will vote on merit after they do their homework. If so, Mr. Miller does not stand a chance to get back on the SB.

Anonymous said...

Woh ran the town during those turbulent FISCAL times...NOT JOE...it was Ed Iacaponi and mike Gagne...dont kid yourself

Anonymous said...

Joe wants to run for state rep too, I think Michaud wants to be a career politician, maybe that's because the area has become so saturated with lawyers, work is slow and he needs a back up....thanks but no thanks Joe ...we already have enough career politicans.

Anonymous said...

Now that the dead line for taking out nomination papers is over we must wait to see who returns their papers on Februay 20th.
Let the race begin!!

Anonymous said...

Politics and politicians? Denial of blame has one of the basic ploys typically utilized. I expect Mr. Miller and his supporters will continue to deny all the nonsense that happened under his regime. No surprise with that. Just like the republicans in Congress. It's as if Geo. W. and Dick Cheney (you remember him, the draft dodging warrior) were never in office.

Arrogance: : an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions.

Hmmmm....not even close in describing Mr. McDonald. What did he ever do to you for you utter such a fabrication such as this?

Anonymous said...

Mr. McDonald, in my opinion, sometimes is less than respectful when he addresses or answers the public, or, at one Town Meeting I remember, a fellow Meeting member.

Any leader and official needs to remember he or she has no special status because of his or her position in town. There is such a thing as tact and respect, and it does go both ways. We all have our bad days when our patience is stretched thin by something or someone, but, as known figures in our town's government, our leaders and officials are held to a higher standard, I think, and need to maintain that extra measure of decorum if they want to be taken seriously and trusted, retain their positions, and command respect.

I am commenting above, with reference to leaders and officials in general. Humility goes a long way.

Anonymous said...

Ah, yes, I remember that. If I recall correctly, Mr. McDonald was "less than tactful" in responding to a comment made by a previous speaker that was blantantly incorrect and misleading. I think you might have mistaken "passion and caring" for "less than tactful".

I also remember him being the only person tp speak out on the attempt of the Park Board Commissioners to get invloved into the pension system as the SelectBoard did at one time or the attempt of a member of the Planning Board to increase his stipend by a 100%.

I've watched Mr. McDonald on the TV at School Committee meetings and have always found him passionate, caring and respectful for others. This comes from a family that does a lot of volunteer work and/or donates money to several causes in the area.

Please don't confuse passion and caring for anything less than what it is.

Anonymous said...

New chief need not live in town. According to state law a police officer/top cop can live within a 20 miles distance from town line.

Anonymous said...

It is official, as of 5pm -

Michaud versus Miller

McDonald versus Gracie

none of the others turned their papers in.

Also, Nunes, Roscoe and Monteiro for 2 seats on the School Committee.

Anonymous said...

I suppose MacDonald will be running on fiscal conservatism now? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Now THAT'S funny!!!!! This is the guy who gets downright nasty whenever anybody starts asking questions about school spending. How Dare they question the school committee!!!

Anonymous said...

We may be talking about two separate incidents, or we could be talking about the same incident and each perceive it differently.

I just think that, regardless of how much good a person does or how tactful, responsive and generous to the community, or passionate and caring he or she is, the one time he or she loses their cool, is the one time people remember foremost. Sometimes, rightfully or wrongfully, that is the lasting impression one has of that individual.

Have you seen Congress the last 15 yrs?? Puhlease.

Bob Miller WILL have my vote. I respect Bob and the job he has done. Fiscally Dartmouth was one of the best run towns in the Commonwealth when Bob was a member of the board.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, they spent all the money as soon as they got it. And guess who got it?

Anonymous said...

So I suppose because Congress does it, everyone in any government office on any level can do it, too?

At least we can start to clean house on the local level and demand that the public be respected.

Anonymous said...

Wow, Bob Miller! If elected, Dartmouth might enjoy the reinstatement of lifelong contracts drawn up and signed in backdoor deals again. Maybe, we can again enjoy paying insurance rates that are way too high because no one will bother to put them out to bid. Where can I sign up to get that man elected? Ha! Ha! You think Michaud is arrogant? On the contrary. Watching SB meeting will tell you that he treats everyone with respect. As far as cracking a joke about MG, I give JM credit for not publicly humiliating that man when given a captive audience the night of Michaelpalooza. As far Kevin Lee is concerned what ARE his qualifications for the salary he gets? I hear he has a very light schedule all summer. If his job is helping the youth of this community, then why is he not under the school budget ?? That's because everyone on that budget, with a salary even close to his, actually has to prove their qualifications through CERTIFICATION.... So bravo Mr. Michaud for raising very good, fiscally responsible questions !!!

Anonymous said...

Gee, anonymous 5:21, according to 3:47, Mr. McDonald's nastiness should be construed as "passion and caring."

Anonymous said...

It appears to me that some people on this blog have convenient memories or short term memories.

Best advice said...

Mr. McDonald and Mr.Gracie will make a good run but must be willing to go door to door. People like the personal touch. As it relates to town government, both candidates will be required to explain how they whould have voted on the former EA, wind turbines/location, appointment of Mr. Cressman, appointing outside police chief, and overrides.
Keep this in mind, only 25/30% of town voters will be voting. More than 3/4 quaters of thown voters don't give a hoot who is elected. Don't waste your time/money on people who don't vote.

Bob Miller is Crazy to think this town would go back to his old ways.He needs to go back to the old folks home and let some younger newer folks take over.We have seen his type of politics in action for many years! It is really comical to think he could ever win this race!!!!

Anonymous said...

Shaun McDonald wants to work with the teachers' union and have more regular/open meetings with all boards??? Shaun, you couldn't accomplish that as a school com. member for how many years?????
Shaun McDonald belongs on the school com. NOT the select board!

Anonymous said...

Bob was a Selectman for 21 years, he has a host of people who respect him and what he stands for.

He lost by less than 60 votes because of a third candidate in the race (Maynard).

Michaud has done nothing in 3 yrs to make voters like him more, in fact the more people I talk with the more I hear "I won't be voting for him again".

Michaud is in trouble and Bob has a 21 year history of serving the needs of this town.

Anonymous said...

What a joke.

Anonymous said...

Bob Miller was lucky that there was a 3rd candidate runnning last time because all the votes that went to Maynard would have gone to Michaud and Joe would have won by a landslide. Bob Miller does have 21 years of town service behind him or maybe we should call it disservice!!!

Anonymous said...

Maynard, the policeman, caused Miller to lose? Is anyone really dumb enough to think that the police union is backing Michaud? Maynard was there to help Miller, not hurt him and he still lost. Miller has the police vote locked up because he is more about taking care of insiders than taking care of townspeople but he can't escape his good ole boy mentality. The voters know this and he doesn't stand a chance against Michaud.

Anonymous said...

Name calling will get you nowhere. I can smell fear!!

what is Michaud's role with the padanaram village zoning...i smell something fishy and it's not even low tide

what is Michaud's role with the padanaram village zoning...i smell something fishy and it's not even low tide

That would be a BACKROOM deal. The very kind Michaud supporters claim DO NOT exist.

Seems the Michaud crowd is the pot calling the kettle black.

Anonymous said...

Padanaram zoning? What was controversial about that? It was recommended unanimously by fincom and passed town meeting overwhelmingly. If you are looking for controversy, ask about Miller's role in raiding the water and sewer ratepayer's reserve fund. It was found to be illegal and the town was told it could never do it again.

Anonymous said...

Illegal and the name Bob Miller has historically been connected many times. He will be lucky to get 1,500 votes. Personally, I am please he is running. The embarrassing loss may finally convince him and his supporters that the town is wise to him and his nonsense.

Anonymous said...

I hope you have proof or you could be found guilty of libel. You do know you aren't "really" anonymous!

I can smell the fear, people stooping to new levels to scare people from voting for Bob Miller. Dispicable really.
