Republicans oppose health care at the expense of their constituents

Matt Yglesias has this post about Senator Lindsey Graham complaining because Democratic Senators got benefits for their states included in the final health care reform bill. I am not condoning this behavior on the part of Senator Nelson but this is, in fact, how the game is played. In return for your support of legislation, you ask for and often can get concessions that benefit your state. Senator Graham knows this ...

... and despite acknowledging that his constituents could use the help, votes against the bill.
Why?
Don't tell me it is the principle of it. This process is how most legislation garners support. Mr. Graham and the other Republicans have opposed and delayed this reform for the sole purpose of trying to give the President's agenda a legislative defeat. Shame on them and I hope that the voters keep this in mind when these Senators are up for re-election.

Bill, the worst states for health coverage belong to RED states...S. Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, and Alabama...Why do we listen to those who cannot even get their states adequate coverage, to manufactur a bill for the entire country.

It is bribery plain and simple. If we tried to buy a congressman's vote we would be thrown in jail. I say we throw the whole lot in jail and start from scratch. I will say it again, The democrats are ruining this country. They will all be thrown out of office when the time comes.

The special deal for Nevada was wrong, the carve-outs for Louisiana, Vermont and Massachusetts are wrong, and the same applies to the backroom deal for Nebraska. ... If the bill cannot pass without carve-outs, what further evidence is needed that it is bad policy?

Vots at 1:00 a.m. and on Christmas Eve in addition to the out and out bribes? Do they turn the lights off too? Transparent? Yeah ok.

As far as the republicans opposing the bill at their constituents expense - says who? I want my representatives to answer my needs. I want to keep my health insurance and not be bullied by the government into accepting theirs.

Headlines like this one are absolute nonsense.

Seems like a majority of Americans are on the side of the Republicans on this one. I'm a democrat activist but sorry...It is pretty evident that you live in a Massachusetts liberal bubble. Wake up and really listen to the people. This is forced legislation in a non bi-partisan manner on the eve of Christmas. This bill will kill American jobs and business. You can support a bill that will kick our economy while its already down!

2010 is going to be an awful year for our party and its because of poor leadership in DC.

All you have to do is look at the polls. Disapproval is in the high 50s in almost every poll.

Even if this bill passes the Senate it will not be an easy road as the meld the two bills at conference. Once that is done it has to be passed which will be very hard.

Finally, many Constitutional scholars have stated their opinion's that there are several things within the bill that are Unconstitutional. That being said, when the SCOTUS throws out parts or all of the bill the Dems will no longer have 60 Senators so a new healthcare bill will surely be more to the liking of more Americans.

Odd how Bill is fine with "this is how the game is played" when the benefits go to Democrats, yet he is outraged when Republicans use stalling techniques in the Senate. Isn't that how the games is played as well William?
