Bristol Sheriff in the news

There were a couple of news stories about the Bristol County Sheriff, Mr. Hodgson today.
The Herald News reports that Sheriff Hodgson has been ordered to repay the $5 daily fees that he collected from inmates during the 2002-2004 period. The Supreme Judicial Court ruled the sheriff was not authorized to assess the inmate fees.
The Chronicle reports that Representative Quinn has filed a Public Records Act complaint with the Secretary of State's Public Records Division charging that the Sheriff had failed to comply with his request for records. The act, MGL chapter 66, section 10, requires a response ...

... to a public records request within ten days. Mr. Quinn said in the story that other state and county agencies had responded with in the time frame of the statute and only the Bristol Sheriff had not. I was not able to locate the Chronicle article online, sorry, no link.

At least he is trying. What the hell is wrong with having these losers pay for a small portion of their upkeep. I actually work for a living and like the fact that some elected official is try to make these complete drags on society, these people who offer no redeeming qualities whatsoever, who do nothing but burden us with their offensive behavior and additional offspring PAY SOMETHING BACK!! GO TOM HODGSON!!

Tom Hodgeson....a Republican is supposed to be theoretically a fiscal conservative. BUT SPENDS MONEY ...YOUR MONEY...like its FREE...boats,trucks, all types of STUFF that just doesnt need to be in the sheriff's office.

5 MILLION DOLLARS he has spent friviously on a lawsuit against the correctional officer union...he knew he would lose...but his PRIDE blinded him

John Quinn will do to the bristol county sheriff department the same thing he brought to the state house. Nothing!Where does Quinn get all the experience to become a sheriff. Quinn will be another left wing liberal, holding open house on holidays, and have a cake sale.
Hodgson is a mean ass basted, but this is what some of the prisoners need. Quinn will hand out lolly pops and cookies. You've got to be kidding, Quinn as sheriff what a laugh. Barney five can do a better job than Quinn.

GIVE ONE example of QUINN being a left wing LIBERAL...oh thats right...you cant!

I guess you see it fit to spend MILLIONS on frivilous lawsuits that "Hodge Podge" never had a chance of winning.

Give ONE example of the "NOTHING" John has done as a state REP!!

Quinn got over a million dollars for Dartmouth to offset the increase in the Voke assessment.

I think it's time for a change in the Bristol County House of Correction. I will vote for Quinn. Sheriff Hodgeson has been there too long! Quinn is conservative in his spending and I think he will be an improvement over Tom's spending sprees for his toys, at our expense!

The word basterd is misspelled....it should be BASTARD.

John Quinn isn't qualified to become sheriff. It takes alot more than a local twerp, to handle all the misfits being held, at the county jail. You may not like Hodgson, and in some instance, I've raised my eyebrow, but don't even attempt at explaining.... why Quinn. The jail birds, being held at the county jail, are their for committing crimes against society. Stealing cars, breaking into houses, drug dealers and the list goes on, and on. These malcontents are getting a free ride, on the counties money/taxpayers money.
I know and understand that Hodgson can be tough on his people, but some times it's just the way of conducting business. Hodgson will not lose the election to John Quinn or any other local politician. For the most part, the bristol county voters like the way Hodgson is doing business. I believe that all jail birds should pay for their stay, at the county jail. I enjoy seeing jailers picking up road side trash, painting school buildings, and all in the name of saving money for bristol county cities and towns. I don't want to sound distasteful toward Quinn, I don't know the man. It's just my opinion that not any PERSON can become a sheriff.
What are the qualifications to become a sheriff? Just look at Sheriff Hodgson. The people may not like him, but thet like what he is doing.
When was the last time we had a disruption at the jail? If you can remember, than how many have we had since the last one.

Yeah a million dollars to offset the voke spending bill that shuld have NEVER become law. Didn't he even see the implications of this travesty. Because he was asleep at the wheel Dartmouth and Fairhaven now spend 4 times as much as New Bedford per student. GREAT JOB with your money

Hodgson has challenged the status quo in the form of UNIONS that steal from the taxpayers with their ridiculous demands> I beleive that the Court stopped the Pay as You Serve program because their was no legislative authority granted that allows the Sheriff to charge these clowns for their upkeep.

Sooooo that begs the question, will Quinn sponsor legislation that wouls allow Sheriff's to charge nominal fees to these societal deadbeats so they can offset a miniscule portion of their cost?

If Quinn is law and order he needs to address his stance on this, the death penalty and other law and order issues otherwise I'll assume we'll be returning the the old Nelson Country Club days of weight rooms, gymnasiums and cable TV on the taxpayers dime.

What exactly, besides a huge ego and a need for attention from the media, qualifies Hodgson for the sheriff's job. He has NO qualifications to speak of.
Maybe if we get a smart administrator without the ego and need for the limelight, we won't have to spend our money on lawsuits and publicity stunts.

I would like to state one of the qualities Rep John Quinn brings to this election. It is a quality many great politicians both Republican and Democrat have had through the years and it should never be underestimated. John Quinn is a coalition builder. It is one of many reasons he has been so successful in this region and on Beacon Hill and why I think he would make a great Sheriff. He listens to different view pointes and finds common ground. Listening is a rare ability in politics these days. Those who know John know I am speaking the truth about him. I would be very interested to know some of the qualities of the current Sheriff that some of his supports value. Maybe I am foolish trying to start a serious dialogue here, but I think this is the most interesting race in our region in years.

TOMMY HoDGESON was a PART TIME COP in Jersey...what the heck kind of qualifications is THAT...before that he was a freakin landscaper!!!

Subject...serious dialog

I have known John Quinn for a very long time, I like John Quinn. I don't consider John to be the brightest state Representative on the political circulate, but he has done a decent job representing Dartmouth. If John were being considered as a court magistrate, or county judge, I would support him and his qualifications, to become a court official.
As it relates to becoming a sheriff, you mention two subjects for qualification.
1.He will make a great sheriff.
2.He listens.
You mention/question, if we can have a serious dialog here. We both know the answer to your question. You throw out for discussion, the qualities of support for Sheriff Hodgson.

I have know Sheriff Hodgson for a very long time. I like Sheriff Hodgson. As it relates to any/all county Sheriffs, I consider ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssSheriff Hodgson to be one of the best, if not the best county sheriff, in the commonwealth. He has implemented several/many correctional inmate incentives, both popular and unpopular. Everything from farming to community services, provided to Bristol County cities/ towns. He has applied and received several federal grants to provide addition equipment on other items of government surplus that have been an asset to both the county and the inmates.

If I have any criticism of Sheriff Hodgson, it's his determination to set the example, believe in what you are doing, dam the torpedoes; straight ahead mentality. I do believe that at times he is ill advised, by his insiders. As in all great leaders, it's not the enemy that will become your demise, it's your closes friends.

To both John Quinn, and Sheriff Hodgson, a few words from an unknown author dated back in 1692, exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.

I'll be supporting Hodgson.

Why can't everyone see this for exactly what it is. Quinn is trying to trade in his 55,000 a year job for one paying well over 100,000 dollars.

Quinn is attempting to abuse the retirement system at the same time the State House is trying to curtail this type of abuse.

When Quinn retires as Sheriff (6 yrs) his retirement will be based on his high 3 yrs. Those years will be Sheriff year enabling him to retire at over 80,000 per year instead of 42,000.

I just call em like I see em.

Anonymous said...

While I don't think abusing the retirement system is Quinn's primary motive, this is another example of why we need to come out of the dark ages and have retirement reform that includes defined contributions. Not the recent joke of a reform bill that all our legislators were touting as fixing the problem. Yes it was a joke alright, a joke on the taxpayers.

political t-shirts for inmates said...

When a convicted felon is sent to the county jail, no one asks if they are democrat or republican.

In this posters opinion, if Bristol County inmates ( convicted felons ) were aloud, they would all wear t-shirts supporting John Quinn for sheriff.

John Quinn is running for sheriff because he is sick of the Boston politics. As I hear it, he and the house speaker are not on good terms. It appears that John Quinn has a habit of supporting the wrong person for house speaker. This prevents John Quinn from certain committee chairmanships. Truthfully, I don't blame John Quinn for leaving the state house.
As to why he decided to run for sheriff, only John really knows. I believe it's because of the above mentioned. As it pertains to the state house, John Quinn gets no respect from the house leadership.

John Quinn is a democrat running for sheriff. The Bristol County Southeastern section is heavily democrat. John Quinn is favored to win in the primaries. This will allow John Quinn to expose Sheriff Hodgson, as a spend free, do nothing sheriff, that has caused the county to spend monies on frivolous law suits. John Quinn is a lawyer, he would know about law suites. John Quinn has no law enforcement experience. John Quinn was raised on a privileged estate, with no trespassing and beach privileges for residency only.

Sheriff Hodgson, a military veteran, has been our sheriff for a long time. People may not always agree with Sheriff Hodgson, but most agree that he has kept the bristol county house of correction from becoming a country club. Most inmates, do not want to return back to the bristol county house of correction.

Hodgson was NEVER in the military, was a part time police officer in New Jersey, a landscaper in Mass and then appointed to Internal Affairs and then appointed to the post of Sheriff after Nelson left in disgrace to avoid a scandal.
I wouldn't call Direct TV feeds for all Bristol County House of Correction inmates 'tough on crime'. Would you?
