Fairness to taxpayers

Here's why we should tax the big banks

Too big to fail, should be too big to exist. Time for regulatory reform.

Who left Barry Walker's name off the Dartmouth Finance Committee Warrant Article Recommendations paper that came with the Town Meeting packet?

The banks paid back their loans with interest. It is UNFAIR to make them pay a tax because the auto makers are unable to pay back their loans.

Here's some basic facts about things that Scott Bown stands for.....you decide which side of the fence you're on. 1.)Tax cuts to the top 2% wage earners in the country has NEVER created economic growth. In fact, economic growth has occured at it's greatest rate when the top 2% are taxed at a HIGHER rate. The top 2% tend to invest more, to make ... See Moremore, to make up for the inreased tax level. That increased investment creates jobs, increases state, local, and federal revenue. Corporate greed to take advantage of tax cuts for personal wealth for the top 2% is constantly a driver for an economic slowdown. 2.) Our country, because of trade deficits and corporate greed, is reliant on small business. But health care insurance costs escalate annually at a rate of more than double the average revenue growth for small and medium sized businesses, and rapidly becomes unaffordable to businesses of under 100 employees. Without significant changes to the health care insurance industry, it will become completely unaffordable to small businesses and individuals. This obviously scares the corporate culture within the industry.....hence the SUBSTANTIAL increase to Scott Brown's campaign war chest. Insurance company's newsletters have IMPLORED their employees to donate to Scott Brown's campaign. Why do you think they do that? 3.) Scott Brown's desie to broadly reduce the tax rates would have a tremendous negative impact on education, particularly in urban areas, such as New Bedford. New Bedford, as well as other urban areas in the country, struggles significantly with an ever increasing dropout rate. And for those dropouts, without manufacturing jobs to go to, where do they work? Many do not. Many involve themselves in illegal activity to support themselves, and many just become dependent on "the system", because of no other alternatives. We need to invest MORE in education, not less. And it doesn't necessarily need to be traditional education. Training that can prepare people for a specific job, outside of the traditional educational system is needed for people who did not graduate from high school. But that can't be accomplished with tax cuts. With reduced level, comes reduced services and reduced funding for education. It is an enormous problem, and it takes investment to do it. The corporate world has had the chance to to this themselves, but instead look to state a federal grants to cover training expenses. And finally 4.) the banking industry needs increased regulation, or we will constantly battle corruption, which is exactly what drove us to the economic situation we are currently in. Scott Brown's special interest backing is paranoid of regulations being turned up. Again, I wonder why.

Being a new member my name was probably left off the list because someones' list hasn't been updated. I am sure it is nothing more than a minor clerical error and not part of some big political conspiracy. See you all at Town Meeting.

Police chief update

As it relates to the Dartmouth police chief search, can you provide an update??

Anonymous said...

Let's start by battling corruption in government. Martha does not seem up to that task never mind more regulations and bigger government.

As for more money for everything related to education - we've been spending more money for decades and just how has that helped that drop out rate? It has not. Or inner city school success or failure? Again it has not. Parental involvement and personal responsibility are at the core of many school problems, and no amount of increased taxes will save that.
As far as your assertion that insurance company's are behind Scott Brown's war chest - nonsense. The truth is he has applealed to a large community of common people who do not like what Coakley or Obama are selling. That'show he got my donation.

That's why the Cambridge rank and file police support Brown too. Or is it because Obama called them stupid?

I wasn't suggesting it was any type of conspiracy!! I just noticed that Tenney's name was off the list and that yours had not been added. That, considering the Finance Committee Warrant Article Recommendations paper was dated January 26th, 2010, suggested that the committee list should have been updated at that time; if the date could be added (this wasn't a boilerplate form that needed no additions, obviously) and Tenney's name removed, I would think that since you have been a member of FinCom for a few weeks now, the list would be (should be) kept up to date. If you can add a date, you can add a name, and should have. That's the gist of my comment.

It's all in the details.

Is there a job in Town Hall for a copy reader? I'm experienced.

Who's Obama kidding? The government played no role in the banking crisis? No mention of Barney, Dodd, the push to gie everyone and his brother a mortgage? Look at all the federal programs offered to so-called first time homebuyers. Ever hear of 'soft second' mortgages? Can't afford the down payment on a house? Guess what Uncle Sam offerd a 'soft second' mortgage - or in other words a mortgage on your down payment. Everybody wins right? Guess not.
Since when are profits a bad word?

voting law violation said...

While walking into my precinct, I noticed a poster stapled to the side door. The same poster but of a different color was also posted inside the voting booth. It was a sample ballot of how you must circle the entire circle along side the name of your candidate. The poster shows the second circle from the top as the circle to marked by a special marker provided inside the voting booth. This is so suggestive and an obvious a violation of the state laws of voting, that I brought it to the attention of the poll supervisor who explained that several voters have brought this to their attention.
What say YOU.

Anonymous said...

Reminds me of when they hid the new high school question on the ballot.

ballotgate said...

You got to hand it to the Town of Dartmouth democratic committee, they know how to play the subliminal messages. As it relates to the posters, the the town clerk is going to hear from the state department for elections. The ballot had four choices for selection. Brown was first, Coakely was second, Kennedy was third, and a write in was forth. The show me how poster, had the second circle filled in with a black marker. Please don't tell me that the clerk didn't see the obvious, or maybe she did.
.What ca we do about the ballotgate?

Why will the dems lose tonight? Because MA health care reform was a joke. All it did was make more people pay into the insurance system. The dems had control of Congress and the White House, yet they couldn't get anything better for the people concerning health care than the failed state reforms did. They failed us on health care and they are about to pay the price.

Anonymous said...

first of all, Scott Brown voted for this masscare. third if you voted and paid attention..the poster has ALWAYS had second circle filled in

Anonymous said...

Coakley has conceded. This has less to do with Brown than it does with independant voters. We want fiscal conservatism and meaningful reforms. We get neither. All we get is dog and pony show reforms like the recent health care and pension reforms from the state.

Nothing short of HISTORIC for Scott Brown. Would love to be a fly on the wall in the White House.

You're wrong James. The people want real health care reform not what the Democrats are trying to push through. What happened to the public option??? The only thing this bill is doing is telling the people they have to pay for their health insurance and then pay for those who cannot afford it. What's in it for hard working people? No public option that would help lower costs. No incentives for the insurance companies, doctors & hospitals to keep costs down. No tort reform that would also lower costs. Nothing except more revenue for insurance and drug companies and we the people get to pay for it. Don't blame the Republicans. The Democrats had control and it was supposed to be their issue. So where's the meaningful reform???

Ah, the power of the blanket label "anonymous."

It gives people the opportunity to voice their opinions, provide information, and yes, even do some good. Where would we be if it weren't for the anonymous tip lines implemented by police departments who seek the public's assistance to apprehend someone having broken the law? How many victims of domestic and child abuse would be swept under the rug if it weren't for the opportunity for you and I to call in and report them? Perhaps "anonymous" is not all that bad a designation. How many people have benefited, do you think, by anonymous tips made by people who know they do not have to be labeled "busybody" or worse yet, fear retribution by coming forth and doing the right thing by providing valuable information?

Too bad some do abuse the freedom that powerful word holds for us, to spew their venom, name call, and attack others whose identity they do not know, simply because they choose not to be named.

On a local (Dartmouth) level, wouldn't we all be surprised if the identities of all these anonymi were made known? Would some of the posters here hold the same opinion of these anonymous individuals if they knew just who posted what? Would they be that quick on the attack? Would their comments be that derogatory and mean-spirited?

It would be interesting to find out.

Just sign me Elmer.

Bill, how about a new thread congratulating our new Senator? or have you gone the sour grapes route like James? The way I see it, Obama has a golden opportunity to build on this situation. Acknowledge the message and send congress back to work on Job creation first and then work on a reasonable health care reform package. His popularity would soar!

Actually i am a resident of Pennsylvania and I have nothing against Mr Brown, I congratulate him for his good campaigning abilities. I just found this blog and check in to see what the yanks are doing, and I like to insult repuglicans. who are 75% of as formerly respectable party.

I really don't have a dog in this fight, I just don't like the "no we can't" attitude of the R party.
The only thing they "can do" is line the pockets of their friends and keep the people down with stupidity.

I know I attack like a rabid dog - I take my training from the opposition. but I use some facts to back up my arguments where the opposition use ridiculous arguments as if their philosophical training was from Rush Limbaugh. If anyone believes the R's will do anything to change healthcare for the better; they have taken the kool-aid.

Congrats Elmer on not hiding like an anony mouse! Courage becomes you!

Bill - no new thread? No congratulations or some whining blog about how Martha lost? Or maybe some rationalization about how this was a referendum oon the past 8 years like Obama said this morning?

As for James, his talent seems to lie in name calling and sour grapes. Oh well not much you can do for people like that.

All the hand wringing here tells me many still do not understand the meaning behind yesterday's race. That's OK by me too, it only means one thing; more victories in November.

GO BROWN!

Until the R's have an agenda other than "no", they got some splainin' to do. From their recent performance they are not the "other party" anyone has confidence in.

Anonymous said...

James.... there is obviously no confidence in the Obama agenda either.

Bad Robot said...

I have no confidence in either party. Whichever candidate in any race who is seen as closer to their party "establishment" is going to have serious problems going forward. Both parties know it too. That is why the attack ads alway portray candidates with their party leaders. We've "had it." The tea party is just beginning and the only reason republicans will benefit more from it is because there are more democrats to throw out of office right now.

Michaud says he is running for re-election to the Select Board in the April town election — and, in November, will likely make a bid for state representative, as well.

Michaud confirmed he is eyeing the state representative seat currently held by Rep. John F. Quinn, who is not seeking re-election, instead running for Bristol County sheriff.

If elected to both seats, Michaud said his intention is to remain on the Select Board until the April 2011 town elections, when he would resign. In this way, he said he would save the town the expense of a special election.

Michaud said he will run as a Republican for the 9th Bristol District seat, but added he is "a Weld Republican" who is conservative on fiscal issues while liberal and moderate on social issues, referring to former Gov. William F. Weld.

Quinn, D-Dartmouth, has decided to end his 17-year legislative career in favor of running for Bristol County sheriff. Quinn and retired state trooper Alan D. Garcia are seeking the Democratic nomination. Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson is the incumbent.

Michaud, a New Bedford lawyer, said Quinn's decision to run for sheriff provides him with an opportunity to seek reforms — accountability and rationalization — at the state level.

"It's certain that I'm looking at it and I certainly think I'll seek that office," he said. "I think every indication is I will."

The representative district includes all of Dartmouth; Precincts F and G of Ward 3 in New Bedford, Precinct 2 in Freetown and Precinct 1 in Lakeville.

Others being mentioned in connection with the state representative race are Gregory C. DeMelo of Dartmouth, who has run in the past for Bristol County commissioner; Raymond Medeiros Jr., chairman of the Dartmouth Democratic Town Committee; Jason Wentworth, a member of the Dartmouth Finance Committee; and New Bedford City Councilor Kathy M. Dehner.

But while openly interested in the seat, Michaud emphasized that his primary focus is the Select Board.

He said he took out nomination papers last week to run for a second term on the Select Board. The town elections are April 6.

"There are a great many things that are unfinished," he said, explaining his reasons for seeking re-election.

He mentioned efforts to implement a new permitting process and the regionalization of services. The town has appointed a new executive administrator and is searching for a new chief financial officer and new police chief.

In other town election news, Select Board member Nathalie L. Dias said she is undecided whether to seek a third term.

"There are some things I have to weigh before I come to a conclusion about whether I will run or not."

But while Dias is undecided, David Gonsalves of 8 Fieldstone Lane has taken out papers for her seat.

Taking out nomination papers in other town races are: Shawn D. McDonald, School Committee; Kevin C. Santos, Board of Assessors; John P. Haran, Planning Board; and Elaine Lancaster, Housing Authority. Lancaster was appointed to fill an unexpired four-year term on the housing board and seeks to retain the seat.

DAMN, what a buch of teabaggers on this BLOG

Anonymous said...

Call them teabaggers or whatever you want. I voted for Obama and I attended a tea bag rally in RI. It wasn't a bunch of radicals or extremists or anti-Obama people. They were hard working people who felt their government was no longer serving the people and wanted to make their feelings known. There is nothing wrong with that. Whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent, most people, if they are honest with themselves, will agree that there is a lot to be dissatisfied about. What has occurred in this country did not happen over night. There is plenty of blame to go around. Anytime Americans challenge their government when they feel it is not serving them is a good thing. I personally think the discontent is a little late in coming but better late than never. Do not be so quick to dismiss these people or assume it's all about party lines.

Anonymous said...

Why were you there? and why did you vote for Obama

Anonymous said...

I voted for Obama because I felt that this country needed to improve our foreign relations and I didn't believe McCain was the person who would do that. I believe that Pres. Obama is not only extremely intelligent but has the demeanor and diplomatic skills needed to deal with the world we now find ourselves living in. I also felt there needed to be a message sent that the Republican party had lost its way. I am an Independent and will vote for whoever I feel is the better candidate and I felt Pres. Obama was that person. That doesn't mean I am now happy with my government. I attended the tea bag rally because again, I felt there needed to be a message sent to Washington. The message I wanted to convey was that the people are watching and will continue to show their discontent when need be. As I stated in my earlier post, I believe the discontent is long overdue. For me this is not about Pres. Obama. It is statement about our overall government and how it has stopped serving the people.

The IRS decides to audit Grandpa, and summons him to the IRS office.

The IRS auditor was not surprised when Grandpa showed up with his attorney.

The auditor said, 'Well, sir, you have an extravagant lifestyle and no full-time employment, Which you explain by saying that you win money gambling. I'm not sure the IRS finds that believable.'

I'm a great gambler, and I can prove it,' says Grandpa. 'How about a demonstration?'

The auditor thinks for a moment and said, 'Okay. Go ahead.'

Grandpa says, 'I'll bet you a thousand dollars that I can bite my own eye.'

The auditor thinks a moment and says, 'It's a bet.'

Grandpa removes his glass eye and bites it. The auditor's jaw drops.

Grandpa says, 'Now, I'll bet you two thousand dollars that I can bite my other eye.'

Now the auditor can tell Grandpa isn't blind, so he takes the bet.

Grandpa removes his dentures and bites his good eye..

The stunned auditor now realizes he has wagered and lost three grand, with Grandpa's attorney as a witness. He starts to get nervous.

'Want to go double or nothing?' Grandpa asks 'I'll bet you six thousand dollars that I can stand on one side of your desk, and pee into that wastebasket on the other side, and never get a drop anywhere in between.'

The auditor, twice burned, is cautious now, but he looks carefully and decides there's no way this old guy could possibly manage that stunt, so he agrees again.

Grandpa stands beside the desk and unzips his pants, but although he strains mightily, he can't make the stream reach the wastebasket on the other side, so he pretty much urinates all over the auditor's desk.

The auditor leaps with joy, realizing that he has just turned a major loss into a huge win.

But Grandpa's own attorney moans and puts his head in his hands.

'Are you okay?' the auditor asks.

'Not really,' says the attorney. 'This morning, when Grandpa told me he'd been summoned for an audit, he bet me twenty-five thousand dollars that he could come in here and piss all over your desk and that you'd be happy about it!'
