Local schools adopt "uniform" policy

The Herald News has an article today about the Fall River School District adopting a policy requiring middle school and some elementary students to wear uniforms to school. There are exemptions for objections on religious grounds or for financial hardship.
I like the idea and ...

...would not mind if it were adopted in our own district.
Hey, it won't hurt. What do you think about school dress codes and uniforms?

From the Dartmouth HS Handbook -

DRESS CODE

Students are expected to be clean and neat and to wear clothes that are not distracting to the student and staff population and that are in good taste. We expect students to be attired in a (casual) professional manner, similar to the expectations of an office in the work place. For example, shirts that contain vulgar language or depictions, or sexual innuendos are not acceptable and will necessitate a student being asked to change his/her attire. Interpretation of this statement will be left to the discretion of the administration. Students are expected to wear shoes at all times. For public safety and health reasons, students are not allowed to wear hats (defined as any head cover) or chains or any ornamentation that can be used as a weapon upon entering the school doors in the morning until leaving the school doors in the afternoon. Beach attire (muscle shirts, tube and tank tops that expose mid-drift or cleavage, spaghetti-strap tops, any undergarments showing, etc.), is inappropriate for school. Coats, jackets, heavy duty outer garments, or cloaks are not to be worn in the school at anytime between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 2:03 p.m. This rule is waived by the Principal when necessary for health reasons.

Inappropriate clothing is not allowed at Dartmouth High School. Any garment that displays or advertises alcohol, drugs, tobacco, sex or gang related subjects is considered inappropriate clothing.

Are you kidding me Bill? We have many serious issues facing the Dartmouth Public Schools, the least of which currently involve what the students wear to school.

I encourage your involvement in school issues but why don't you simply walk into one of our schools and spend an hour one day in a classroom with a teacher or one of our parent volunteers. That's where you will begin to understand what is happening vs what needs to happen.

How many kids have been injured or even killed because some other kid was jealous of what he or she was wearing, like a designer name or top dollar sneakers, and wanted them?

Maybe it hasn't happened here, but you can't assume it couldn't or won't.

Maybe the concept of uniforms should be put to a vote by parents. I would imagine a lot of them might welcome the idea.

Anonymous said...

4:12, you're complaining because Bill brings up the issue of uniforms???

Anonymous said...

I am against uniforms. You see, my plan is to bring in a bunch of low income housing because state funded sect. 8 people are paid for by the state and they pay top dollar for everything. This will keep the school dollars flowing and these people don't vote so we can control everything. We'll have our overrides every time and with each one we pass, we'll get rid of those working class families that do the right thing but can't afford to live here. We'll have nothing but rich and poor so our kids will need to be dressed appropriately. That way they'll know who they should be hanging around with.

Anonymous said...

I'm complaining because Bill complains that he can't get involved in school issues and then chooses an issue that currently has no relevance in our school district to seek opinions on. Why waste our time?

Anonymous said...

If you think it's a waste of time then don't comment. Bill is only asking for opinions, not law. It is a topic to discuss. I happen to think uniforms are a great idea. It takes away a lot of the peer pressure, bullying, and ridicule that some children are subject to. It also relieves parents from the pressure of trying to keep up with current fads and very expensive clothing.

Trimble didn't get elected to the school committee. If you are looking for someone to participate in all things school, then go to Burger King and drag "Whopper Boy" out of there. He's the one that got elected to the School Committee. Mind your manners.

Bill Trimble said...

Perhaps you would come to the joint meeting of the Select Board and School Committee next Tuesday and tell the School Committee that you would like to have Select Board members get more involved with school decisions.
As for school uniforms, it was in the paper and I thought it a good idea and I posted about it. Predictably, you find fault with that.
Finally, the meme that I need to go spend time in the schools is bogus. What would I see in an hour or a day? I would see students and teachers going about their business. I don't ride the back of the garbage trucks or sit with the clerks at Town Hall either. What does that prove?

Bill Trimble said...

One school issue I would like to be involved in is starting a Commonwealth charter school in Dartmouth. Anyone want to volunteer to help me get that off the ground?

Anonymous said...

And that would be the day the School Committee would abdicate any of its power to the SB. Serious reality check needed here.

Anonymous said...

Riding a garbage truck or sitting with the town clerk or spending an hour in a classroom is the first step to improving an organization that is broken. Spending a little time understanding the workings and the people that make it run is imperative to understanding how the organization runs as the town leader. The schools are also part of the town as are the children.

And no Bill making children wear uniforms isn't going to make it better.

Anonymous said...

Nobody, Bill included, said it was going to make anything "better," whatever you mean by that.

However as he did say, it can't hurt.

Anonymous said...

What does Whopper Boy think about school uniforms? Why doesn't Phil Lenz ride on the back of the garbage truck so he can learn first hand about the fiscal woes facing dartmouth beyond the school system? I'm sure there are plenty of burger king bags with a few fries left in the bottom to keep him occupied while he's riding along in the garbage truck. Here we go again. You people are all just as stupid as Lara and Phil. Mind your manners and things will stay civil.

Anonymous said...

Bill - I'm not sure why you will not delete such horrendous comments about my colleague. Phil Lenz does not deserve such treatment on a public forum. He has done nothing but volunteer his time and effort to improve things in our town. Agree or disagree with his positions Phil deserves our thanks and respect. I hope you will re-consider your 'no moderating' stance and remove such vial comments as those continually posted by anonymous 8:27.

Looks like some people just enjoy being downright ugly.

Anonymous said...

Greg Jones, I don't remember you posting anything about the vial(sic) comments made about Diane Gilbert by the Stone camp. Why not? She even supported you. While we're at it, "Mr research shows" research shows that children who are told that they are the best do better on tests than children who are told that they are not. Yet you and yes Liz continue to run around town bemoaning our failing schools. You and Russell have created a self fulfilling prophecy. By the way, will you be asking the Select Board members for more input on school policies this Tuesday? I guess you'd want Bill to delete this post. Not respectful enough for you. Hey, if you can't run with the big dogs stay under the porch.

Anonymous said...

Please let's not turn the Select Board into a mini School Committee. It's bad enough that it could readily turn into an extension of the SC all by itself; let's not actively look for it to do so and encourage it along.

The Select Board is supposed to be representing the residents of this town, not just a certain segment. If this keeps up, we won't be able to distinguish between the Board and Committee.

Of course, when you think about it, how readily would the SC welcome any of the SB's suggestions or input? With about the same willingness it demonstrated when asked to meet with the SB last year. How many months did it take before the two actually sat down together?

Anonymous said...

This is the problem with this blog. Instead of sticking to the subject matter (uniforms) it becomes an attack-fest on anyone and on occasion everyone. If these complainers think they can do better then run for the office, until shut up. As for uniforms, I think its a great idea ! That school handbook rule would be great if it was enforced, which if you spend 1 hr in the school you would see that. I woudl even add that teachers and staff would be required to dress proper as well. No low-cut blouses like many wear. Remember, it all starts at the top, and the top doesnt care. The top is only interrested in their own agenda, not the students, education or anything else. Come to DHS and see for yourself

Anonymous said...

Anon 10:35, your memory must be pretty short as I did in fact stand up for Mrs Gilbert when she was unfairly treated but that's besides the point. What is amusing for me however, is that I've yet to meet a 'Big Dog' as you call yourself named anonymous.

The point of the nasty comments as already stated in other posts is that this will not be tolerated. When attacks are made (Trimble was attacked for posting this issue) there will be counter attacks until people learn to be civil. If you would like to discuss isssues, then lets discuss them.

Anonymous said...

Lets have a discussion: who would pay for the uniforms? who would supply the uniforms? what if parents cant afford uniforms will they be provided? If they cant pay $2 per year for a youth advocate they cant pay for uniforms. fair is fair. Some of the clothing worn these days surprises me and is not allowed as long as I am purchasing said clothing. Other parents have no problem apparently with what their kids wear.

Anonymous said...

I assume that parents are currently buying clothes for their children. This will reduce the cost. Instead of paying ridiculous prices for a tee shirt with Abercrombie or whatever the latest brand is, they can buy at Old Navy or, heaven forbid, JC Penney.

Anonymous said...

Bill wasn't attacked, he was questioned for his post title. He wasn't called a name, he was just questioned on his choice of topic.

Phil Lenz did not deserve your attack as he is one of the most dedicated, hard working individuals that volunteers his time in this town.

Bill please reconsider your position and remove this vile persons posts.

Anonymous said...

I can assume you never went to catholic school. the uniforms are supplied by a specific company usually at a premium price and you cant wear the clothes anywhere but school(why would you?)so this is an additional expenditure for uniforms that the parents must incur. What happens if the parents cant afford it? the child stays home? dont give me the parents can afford it business because that goes directly against the time worn argument against the overrides that the people cant afford to pay anymore. If they cant afford a override they certainly cant afford uniforms for their children.

Bishop Stang's skirts are 50 dollars.

Anonymous said...

Read the article! You people have no idea what you're talking about

Anonymous said...

What don't we get? No matter what the cot of the uniform do you think our children are going to wear their uniforms all the time? No. That means we will have to provide both, whether they cost $35 as this article proposes or more.

Bill/6:26 - I tried to comment on momof3 site regarding this request. I have mentioned the topic to Greg a while back and will follow up with him as I would be able to put those interested in touch with people a few years into the process in my hometown. Meanwhile, some may want to check out Public Impact at publicimpact.com.

Also, town/city halls have become involved with public education both seperate from and jointly with their SC. Charter schools address longer term approaches proving overall improvements to public education. There are also efforts to address immediate needs which I know is first and foremost on Greg's mind.

Bill Trimble said...

Some other resources for public charter schools in Massachusetts include the Massachusetts Charter Public School Association, the Massachusetts Center for Charter Public School Excellence and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education There are tons of others but these three can tell you how to organize and implement a charter school in the Commonwealth. Any takers? I think that we will need a group of 10-12 people who are willing to spend time to make this happen.

momof3nPT said...

There's a very interesting clip of Bill Gates discussing charter schools and teaching on Phil's site. He mentions KIPP charter schools system.

Anonymous said...

As Greg has stated many times, it is the immediate needs of the current school population that are at highest risk. I would be interested in being part of a group that would make things happen to address those needs as well as putting the type of charter school in place proving to improve public education over the long term. The model in place is supported by the Gates Foundation among others and often requires legislative changes on the state level to be eligible for funding from such foundations.

Bill Trimble said...

As I have stated here, a public charter school will help the school district by introducing competition for students, reducing the number of students in our non charter schools and allowing innovative and creative methods to be tried and perfected or rejected. Please read this in order to dispel the myths about what a charter school does and does not do for a district.

Bill are you trying to get some more people of your family on the taxpayers backs. You currently have a family member that runs a Charter School somewhere don't you? Open a Charter School here in Dartmouth and they can come back home with a nice job waiting for them, NICE!! Let's see your brother in law Water Dept, correct? What next your wife gets a job at Town Hall?? Maybe she can take over for Doris Copley and then the circle is complete. You have become what you despise the most.
Also since you lost Gilbert your cocky smirk has disappeared, what's going on? I must say i can't wait for your re election..... That all depends on whether or not you still have the stones to throw your hat in the ring.
One other thing have you ever consulted a neurologist?? The way your eyes blink tells me something is up with your hardwiring, ya might want to get that ckecked out.
As for the Burger King reference regarding Phil i would pay a $100 to have that person say that to Phil's face just once. It would be the best $100 i ever spent. To watch your nose get shattered into a 100 pieces would be priceless. Phil is a good decent man who never ever utters a bad word about anyone. You should be ashamed of your self you pussy.

Whopper Boy has four kids in the school system, one of which is special ed. This means we spend about $75K per year on his kids and I don't even mind paying. What I do mind is his attitude that everyone is cheap because they are not spending more. All I ask is that burger boy get a second job at Burger King to at least free up his french fry money to spend on his kids. I have never started a nasty post exchange but I will not let officials who I favor get attacked without reprisals. As for wanting my name, put yours on and you will be face to face with me soon enough. We all know you are too much of a coward to do that though. Mind your manners because I've got plenty more where this came from. The choice is yours.

I cannot stand Lara Stone's high pitched baby talk voice. It is so obnoxious. Especially when what she has to say is usually just mean spirited lies. Mind your manners and things will stay civil.

anon 11:20 a.m. If you know anything about Bill Trimble, then you must know that your personal attacks mean nothing to him. You should know and understand your opponent/enemy before you attack. The only person that seems to be upset here is you.
You believe Phil Lenz is a decent guy but obviously do not feel the same about Bill Trimble who is also volunteering his time to serve the town. If you do not like the nasty comments about certain people, then as stated by the poster, mind your manners. As far as I can tell, no personal attacks are made unless someone else makes them first. Seems only fair to me.
Let's discuss the issues. If you choose to continue with the nasty comments, there will be more of the same.

Anonymous said...

You are wrong 6:02 - Phil Lenz was personally attacked for absolutely no reason.

Anonymous said...

The attacks are completely arbitrary. There is no rhyme or reason. Only a lesson to be learned. Play nice and things will remain civil.

Bill Trimble said...

Sorry to disappoint you but I have 1 sister, a physical therapist, three sister's in law, two nurses and a retiree, and four brothers, two university professors, an engineer and an artist, two brothers in law, a carpenter and a federal employee.

Anonymous said...

You are wrong too anon 7:19. The uniform discussion was going along well enough and then a poster decided it was time to treat Phil Lenz very un-civily. And then we are told to stick to the issues.

Anonymous said...

Awe, some people don't like it when their own tactics of ridicule and negativity are used against them. Too bad, sooooo sad. I have made the decision that I will not allow officials that I favor to be attacked in this manner without aggressive reprisals. If you want to dish it out, you had better be willing to eat it. Mind your manners and things will stay civil.

Anonymous said...

Have you ever spoken of anything of substance or is the best you can do is tell people to mind their manners after you proceed to be decidedly un-civil.
Now how about you minding your manners and things will be civil.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like a good deal to me. We can all be civil now.
