Special Town Meeting adopts local option taxes

A brief Town Meeting approved the three articles on the warrant last night. I posted on the warrant here.
The Town Counsel had prepared the contract for the new Executive Administrator and the Select Board signed it last night. The contract will now go to Mr. Cressman for his signature.

Senator Edward Kennedy passed away today. He was 77 and one of the longest serving US Senators in history.

For those reading today's story in The Standard-Times, I want to clarify that I did NOT comment on the merits of last night's vote. One comment attributed to me states "Town Meeting showed a lot of foresight" in adopting the meals and hotel taxes. I'm not a Town Meeting member. I don't vote on issues. I don't talk about whether Town Meeting voted "right" or "wrong". I just help run the meeting. The comment apparently came from someone else whose name was edited out of the story. Steve, hope you're writing a letter to the editor of the S-T, to clarify the issue, there, too.

All we need is more "information" or "opinion" inferred or attributed to the wrong individual.

Mr. Sharek joins the ranks of those who are misquoted or have comments falsely attributed to them by the sub-standard times. Sad excuse for a newspaper. My sympathies go out to you Mr. Sharek. It is very difficult to undo the damage this newspaper does.

ah yes the substandard times strikes again.

Speaking of the sub-ST, has anyone noticed that Curt Brown's blog is all but dead? I wonder if it is because he allows certain political sides to post nasty personal comments but does not allow anyone from the other side to respond in the same manner. He is obviously biased or perhaps holding a grudge. I would very much like to visit a blog where no personal attacks are allowed but you can't allow one side to post them and not the other. Play fair Curt and maybe people will begin posting on your blog again.

Whoa, slow down. I didn't make my comment to bash Curt Brown or The Standard-Times. People make mistakes. (When I was a reporter from 1975-83, I know I certainly did.) In an e-mail to me, Curt acknowledged the error and said he would write a correction. That's good enough for me.

And, as promised, there's a corection in today's online version of The Standard-Times...

Mr. Sharek, no one can blame you for the comments made here about the ST. Obviously people are not happy with the paper and are just expressing their views. Please don't attribute your post as the reason.

I dont agree with the new tax. We are already taxed. My trash already goes to NB, I'll be using NB restaurants instead. such a shame.

2:50am...its only a matter of time before New bedford adopts. Try Fairhaven restaurants. Then When the y adopt, go to Marion. So on and so on.

My family hasnt visited any establishments in town since 2008.
We avoid chain restaurants, but sadly the family run restaurants have become less than up to par. We have found the service level and food quality has dropped. Well the new tax will just cement our decision to stay at home and save more money.

I go to many Dartmouth restaurants and will continue. Fay's, Healthy Grille, Not Your Avg Joe's, Village Cafe, just to name a few of my favorites. Watch and see what other towns do...

.75 cents on a hundred dollar bill. The impact of this tax has almost no impact on your finances but the positive it brings for the "nice to haves" like the COA is great over the next year. The COA can maybe receive 7 percent back off of their cuts. This is where I would like to see some of the extra revenue go.

I agree, Ray. Less than one buck on a $100 meal!

I understand its less than a buck..but its still another tax. a buck here and a buck there...trash bill..only 80 bucks..trash bags 2 bucks..its the point its a new tax.

Common sense said...

That's the issue 1:52.. some will oppose all taxes regardless. Others will raise taxes regardless. The vast majority use common sense. This just makes sense.

sure lets raise taxes, my umemployment doesnt go up with tax increases. I have received no help from the town (i.e. due dates) due to my unemployment. Im currently 3 months behind on my mortgage, and much more..yet the town keeps raises taxes..I cant keep up.

lol if your unemployed maybe you shouldnt be eating out anyway.

I dont go out to eat thats just my point, its more taxes on top of mores taxes. I wish my unemployment would rise as quiclky as late fees and taxes and fees for this town.

Did'nt the lenght of unemploment benefits just get extended to some ridiculous amount of time? A tax on restaurant meals is a voluntary tax, don't want to pay it? Don't eat out. Don't like Dartmouth's taxes? Find a place that has lower taxes. Not easy to do.

8:03 and 9:40..... you don't get it do you. You are complaining of tax and fee increases at restaurants while you collect unemployment?? Thankfully the government has helped you. Do you mind if the town collects enough to help others? The poster below your last post was right. Go find a community with less taxes than Dartmouth.

ah..I see if your unemployed then move out of town..this is such a great message to send to residents. I hope that person doesnt leave, that would mean less tax money to schools, at least they have unemployement and th ehouse isnt forclosed. That would cause YOUR property value to drop. So I'd suggest you be more open-minded to those less fortunate. I realize this thinking of "if you dont like it then leave" is mostly from one zip code in town, the rest of us dont think that way. Perhaps he/she is my neighbor and I could help them? ISnt that what we shoudl be doing instead of telling people to leave and turning our backs? Im glad I dont live in your neighborhood.

2:34 I agree. That's why Dartmouth needs to collect an additional $.75 on a $100 dollar tab. No one is picking on the unemployed. Making a point. We all need some assistance at some point. It won't be there if all you stand for is cut, cut, and cut.

from 'one zip code' in town? must be 02747-higher property taxes there. that's where all the rich folks live these days. such snobs.
or are they all the over-extended wanna-be's now unemployed?
