Bill, Please remove the link to my website from your list. It no longer exists.
Hello Bill, Did I miss the blog on the relocation of DC TV? Wondering, when and how much it cost to fix the heating system at the old Town Hall (Iacaponi mentioned this was complete)? Now DC TV will need AC and they estimate upgrade and move will cost $200,000? How is this paid for, who funds it? Sounds pricey for a small Cable Channel.
The space they are leaving at the Middle School, which classroom will it be used for, any inkling? Hear that kids are learning in the basement and cafeteria due to lack of space. Thanks for feedback. More info the better, concerned resident. DCTV can they get that promise they want not to move from building, the whole endeavor when you think about it may cost $500,000 when all said and done? That will be an expensive home? Or not?
Now that the cost of the move has been posted as $200,000, I guess I did hear right. I thought it was first stated as being $100,000, at the SB meeting Monday night, then a few seconds into the address to the Board, the figure $200,000 slipped in.
Did I miss something here?
At a previous SB meeting, the question was asked if the school would help with the cost of moving DCTV. Has anything been heard about that?
The additional $100,000 is for renovating the old Town Hall for the rooms needed for DCTV.
The schools will not be providing any money for the move, however an offer for manpower has been made. But, in an e-mail to the schools, a veiled threat not to cover school sports and activities was made if DCTV moved from the middle school.
This is a very important subject, who pays so much for DC TV anyway? Our taxes? Dr. Marland seemed to be accusing the public schools of ousting them without cause, even though space needs seem to be apparent school reason. The thing that was odd, shouldn't a school rep have been informed to be at the SB mtg to answer questions or defend? I just wanna know as a taxpayer, what do we pay yearly for DC TV to exist and function, what are the staff salaries? Is this a necessity? Then, how are we assured what the real cost will be for them to be at Town Hall? Seems pricey to open Cushman?GIdley for Rainy day camp too. Did you hear that idea? I thought those schools were pretty much completely shut down and it would cost much to reactivate? Maybe I'm wrong. Can anyone enlighten us?
Seems like just another political power play by a Marland. Yep a Marland, Cynthia this time. Sister of Lee who is the wife of Diane Gilbert. Not sure how many people know that connection. It seems in this town you need a flow chart to know who is related to who and it certainly helps to know when determining someones political motivations now doesn't it?
DCTV is paid for by a charge on every Comcast subscriber bill in town. Too bad Comcast won't help with the move cost, but I guess if they did our bill would go up.
Lee and Cindy Marland are NOT brother and sister. Get your facts straight before you post, please!
Yes DCTV is funded through your Cable Bill. If you look at your bill there is an "access fee" and that money goes back to the Town to run DCTV only. All DCTV employees are non union town employees who salaries are public record. The $100,000 was mentioned because that was the cost to move to the basement of the Middle School but the DCTV Board of Directors and the Select Board both decided that was not a good move for long range planning. What was said was Wareham just built a studio very similar to what DCTV would be looking to build and it cost around $140,000 but as a budget figure right now they are just saying $200,000. The next step will be for them to have plans drawn up and put out to bid so that they can get hard cost for everything and then will take it back to the Select Board to approve.
PS the heating system was replaced before there was any talk of DCTV moving into this building. The heating system broke down multiple times over this past winter and needed to be replaced asap.
Lee is her great uncle or great cousin I think but NOT her brother
So anon 2:27 if you are so positive that Lee and Cynthia Marland are not brother and sister, please confirm their relationship for us so that we can have our facts straight?
This is not about the schools needing more space. They are talking about moving class rooms that are in the lower level of the building which when I went to school there we had classes do their all the time. So they don't need new class room space. There is something else wrong here. Dr. Russell sits on the DCTV Board of Directors and has not been present at any of their meeting since he made this demand. Dr. Marland even scheduled one meeting around his schedule to make sure he could attend and he still did not go because "something came up." Then the school department wonders why DCTV said something about not covering school events because if this is how they are being treated by the schools why would they want to do anything for them. If Dr. Russell or even a school committee member showed up to any of these meeting then maybe things would be different. You know as well as I do DCTV will continue to cover school events that they are told about but the really question is will the school department talk to DCTV and inform them of these events because if the past 3 months are any indication then the answer is NO!
As far as the School Department giving them manpower is this manpower that DCTV will have to pay for just like every other time DCTV as done anything in the school. Every time they have any work down by the school employees they are charged overtime because it can only be done on Saturday according to Bush St. This is a stupid project.
she is a 2nd cousin to Lee
Phew! I thought we'd have nothing to complain about now the elections are over! And even better we get another chance to slam the schools. Somebody pinch me, I must be dreaming.
Give the students back their school and be done with it.
Funny, the space the school offered the DCTV people was'nt good enough for a cable TV program but somehow it's just fine for education? Explain that for me.
yeah well there current studio as 15 foot high ceiling the space available as a 9 foot high ceiling this alone means that their tv lights that hang from the ceiling will be at about 5 feet so I guess only people under 5 feet can work in there. so there was problem number one that has nothing to do with class rooms. also where they are right now has AC the other area does not so there is another problem and since no class room as AC that is not a problem for a classroom. Don't get me wrong I think they will be better off leaving so that way they don't need to deal with all the BS that goes on in this "wonderful" school system. Where nothing is about the kids it is about the teachers and unions.
So what's the problem then? You think they should leave and they are - sounds like a plan. I'm happy.
DCTV provides a very useful service for the schools as well as the town. Both town and school benefit from DCTV. When the school decided that they needed the room that DCTV was using, why did they not talk to DCTV. They STILL have not talked to Cindy Marland. UNBELIEVABLE! What happen to communication among departments!! Oh well, so they will move to the Old Town Hall and it will cost the town $200,000. Thanks(to the schools) for NOT being part of the process. I think it's about respecting another group who has worked with and for the schools for years! So Sad! I'm sure the schools still want DCTV to broadcast all their sports, band, etc. Again. So sad...
Actually, Marland invited Dr. Russell to 3 meetings with the DCTV Board. The first Dr. Russell had a conflict and could not attend. The second meeting, Mike Gagne, who was on the board, told Dr. Russell is was not necessary for him to attend. The third meeting was this last Monday and Dr. Russell again had a conflict. That conflict was the first of two "Day in the District" with a candidate for the high school principalship.
Dr. Russell has been in constant contact with Marland via e-mails. DCTV was notified of the space needs back in 2008, not January. The School Department has offered manpower from the maintenance staff to move and connect DCTV in their new space.
Dr. Marland layed out a veiled threat that DCTV would not be able to cover school activities if they had to move from the middle school.
So please, know your information before you spread garbage like fact.
Oh, as an FYI, DCTV may be given a year and won't have to move until September 2010. This I heard from a board member who said McDonald made the offer to give DCTV plenty of time to look for space and come up with the funds.
BQ
Thanks BQ for the facts. Imagine the schools want to use their space for education, how selfish of them.
A threat not to broadcast school sporting events, I wonder how some of DCTV's sponsors would feel about that?
Yes BQ, imagine! The school after all doesn't benefit from DCTV? I think it does! Too bad departments can't work together. DCTV is a valuable service to our town and schools. I think DCTV should have been given a heads up with a year to move, not secondhand word. What is wrong with our School Com?
P.S. Who says BQ knows the facts, anyway???
I agree if BQ knows the facts then tell us who you are so that we can judge for our self.
Education is a valuable service to our town and from what I read here DCTV was given at least 9 months notice perhaps more if one believes BQ and still people feel the need to bitch about the schools. The school location was never intended to be permanent. The Middle School is crowded and students should be given the best space possible for learning and should not play second fiddle to a community TV service no matter how noble and good that service is and I agree that DCTV does a good job but the time has come to move on.
What difference does it make who BQ is since he does seemm to know the facts. It appears you just don't want to hear the facts. Remeber Bill says he values everyone's opinion anonymous or not. Children need space for learning, DCTV has found a new home and has plenty of time to move, time to move on to a new topic.
