Orientation for Town Meeting members set

Curt Brown's Standard Times blog reports that Town Clerk Lynn Medeiros has scheduled an orientation session for Town Meeting members ahead of the June 2nd Town Meeting. The session is scheduled for May 12 at 7 p.m. in the Select Board meeting room at Town Hall. The session is to acquaint members with Town Meeting procedures and the functions various town officials provide at the Town Meeting. Those presenting at the orientation are Town Meeting Moderator Steve Sharek, interim Executive Administrator Ed Iacaponi, Finance Committee chair Dr. Peter Friedman, Town Counsel Anthony Savastano, Select Board chair Joe Michaud and Town Clerk Medeiros.
While aimed at newly elected members of our town's legislature, I am sure that ...

... serving members would be welcome. New members will be notified by mail.
For details, contact Ms. Medeiros by email at lmedeiros@town.dartmouth.ma.us or phone 508-910-1800.
Having this session is a great idea. Kudos to those involved in providing it.

I think this is a great idea. It might be worthwhile to even try having an informational session for all town meeting members one week before each meeting. Sort of like a dry run so that members could familiarize themselves with the articles.

We will try to televise the event so that all in town can benefit. It is very difficult to get enough members for a quorum so I believe a dry run might be pushing it.

I am undecided on the issue of changing the form of government but the fact that it is difficult to get a quorum and the obvious lack of in-depth knowledge of the articles by some who do attend are both pros to changing.

There's been no trouble getting a quorum the last four town meetings that I have been a town meeting member.

The problem with town meeting attendance is that over 1/3 of members are employees or directly related. This third is sure to show up because they have a vested interest in doing so. Lately, only about 2/3 of members show up which leaves the town meeting with approximately 1/2 of the attending members being employees or directly related to them. The inmates are running the asylum.

Then run for town meeting instead of blogging about it

I am already a member and I have perfect attendance.

This meeting sounds like a good idea. My question is why has it already been more than two weeks since the Town election and we still do not know the results of the town meeting member elections yet ?

Have you talked to town hall? Last election I got a list of tm election results one or two days after.

On April 7th, the clerk didn't have the results. I had to call TH later in the week or maybe the following week to find out, otherwise I wouldn't have known.

I have also called the town hall to find out if I was elected to town meeting as recent an last Monday and they will not tell me. I guess I have to just sit and wait for a letter in the mailbox.

You probably got a letter from the clerk today, advising you of the orientation for new TM members at 7:00, Monday, the 27th, in the SB room at Town Hall.

Too bad it's the same time as the School Committee meeting. They will be discussing the reason they turned down the grant.

I imagine there will be a lot of angry parents there.

It is on May 12, 2009 a Tuesday not on the same day as the school committee meeting

Sorry, thank you for correcting me. I associated the SB meeting with the SC this Monday and somehow thought the orientation was then, as well I'm glad it's not.
