Pioneer Institute on regionalization

The Pioneer Institute, a Massachusetts public policy think tank, has published a white peper about regionalization of municipal services here It is a critical look at what has worked and what has not. Worth the read. This white paper details two instances of regionalization of dispatch services among other themes.
A good resource for those interested in how governments have privatized services ...

...to control costs can be found at Privatization.org A good place to start is this report, GAO Report on Privatization and Lessons Learned
Take a look at the two papers and let us know what you think about these issues in comments

Bill,
The Pioneer Institute also has a White Paper called Public Pensions: Unfair to State Employees, Unfair to Taxpayers by KEN ARDON It is over twenty pages but also worth a read.

This study talks about consolidating fire services amongst different towns. I would be happy to see fire services consolidated just within our town. Why do we have three different fire districts??? Norm Potochney has been doing some research on this. Perhaps he would be willing to post.

The Fire District, in their current setup, is far less expensive to operate than if they were consolidated and taken over by the Town.

I love how people just throw out statements as though they are fact with nothing to back them up.

Who, the fire dept?

And then disappear. Why is having three departments to run the fire department only efficient for fire departments when every other department is being looked at for consolidaation? Makes no sense whatsoever. There should be no sacred cows any longer.
